After a Government meeting at which Prime Minister Meta sounded the alarm about the catastrophic condition of the country’s roads, the ministers responsible hurried to take a few inspection-style walks along some of the capital’s roads. But judging by the way and the moment the members of the Executive remembered to examine the roads, it is clear that yesterday’s images, broadcast by electronic media or captured on film by the photographers accompanying them, in which the ministers were astonished by the deep, water-filled potholes, were nothing more than a “show.” For anyone living in Albania, scenes like those that impressed the ministers on yesterday’s “walk” have been familiar for years, from before Shuli, Angjeli or Poçi took charge of their respective ministries. Indeed, the state of the roads has been one of today’s officeholders’ favorite topics when criticizing their predecessors. But once they had their ministerial portfolios in their pockets, they would forget everything. In truth, for years senior officials, despite having luxury cars, have found it difficult to avoid the discomfort caused by travelling along the ruined roads. It is clear that an honest and dedicated officeholder, instead of making excuses in response to the public’s justified concerns and complaints, should have been the first to speak out about the state of the roads, striving to set all state mechanisms in motion to restore them to normal. On the other hand, although nearly three years have passed, not one of the ministers in the “Alliance for the State” coalition has taken the trouble to “call on” the relevant colleagues to be held accountable. Moreover, even though large sums of money were said to have been spent just on filling road potholes, no one has been asked to pay compensation for work done “carelessly.” Some ministers really did go out yesterday to “familiarize themselves” with the state of the roads, but since this happened after Prime Minister Meta’s ultimatum, it seems that what worried them more than the roads was the prospect of losing their seats. But setting that aside, and taking at face value the current officials’ desire to see no more potholes on our roads, pessimism inevitably prevails when it comes to turning that desire into reality. How can these ministers, who in three years did not remember to fill even a single pothole, be expected to restore thousands upon thousands of kilometres of roads throughout the country to normal condition? Even in cases where it was claimed that something had been done, it did not take long for things to return to their previous state.
