By MENTOR KIKIA When Democratic leader Sali Berisha announced that he would visit Vlora, he paid no heed to any of the police warnings that the situation there could become tense and get out of control. Indeed, his insistence on going grew even stronger when the media began publishing citizens’ opinions that he should not go to that city. After a demonstrative march, accompanied by hundreds of cars with their horns blaring, Berisha became eager to do the same thing in Prishtina. After that, the idea that no one could stand in Berisha’s way and that he could accomplish whatever he wanted became even more firmly entrenched. Thus, a march toward the uprising of Kosovo Albanians, with a motorcade of cars and DP flags, seemed entirely feasible. But things changed at this point. At Morinë, another state begins (even though the same nation lives there), and the police cordon cannot be broken through by the “Mamurras Democrats.” Preventing an Albanian from going to Kosovo is, in fact, a denial of a right, just as Berisha claimed yesterday after being turned back at the Morinë border crossing. But Berisha squandered every chance to make a visit with all the attributes of a statesman. Unable to ensure a peaceful life for Prishtina, the former president did not even know to write a letter to Mr. Kushner explaining why he was going there and what he intended to do. He did not know to take a plane and land at Prishtina Airport, like all those who land at Prishtina Airport to bring aid—the people who have gone to Kosovo so far. But Berisha could not do these things. He is the most typical representative of the charismatic politician and wanted to enter Kosovo triumphantly, like NATO troops a year earlier.
