Why have Albanian customs officers become impoverished at all customs posts?(!!) Why does the Minister of Public Order accept ill-considered transfers of police chiefs among police stations and regional directorates?(!!) Why are these summary observations the new changing reality offered by left-wing governance in these campaign days and on the eve of the general-election campaign? Thus, viewed in this context, this evident governmental reflection gives us proof of an opportunity left open for the end of the term. In recent days, the Socialists in government have faced sharp criticism from their party’s grassroots. This criticism has been voiced mostly at local conferences of their political organization. Faced with this revealing reaction, the summit of the party pyramid and the current heads of the Executive have themselves made many other moves visible. In this picture of political action, they aim to create the full impression of an action for change. Put differently, this response reflects the willingness to impose a “punishment for past sins” within their own ranks. Yet the action once again appears belated when one recalls the chronicle of scandals involving several ministers, officials and figures in the institutions that were wiretapped. However, this action, summed up as a long-sought “different reality,” also carries the risk of compromising them. In a state that claims to be serious, such campaign-style attitudes cannot be accepted. The feeling and proof that the state’s customs officers’ cohort is impoverished should have been present from the very first day of the government’s term, for the Socialists and the left-wing coalition partners. The “action for change” officially announced by those in government leaves the impression of a temporary fruit, that is, of a campaign and party-political act. The pressure exerted so far, mostly as opposition from public opinion—often described by Socialist leader Nano as “civil society”—seems to be used in this reflection merely as a superficial effect with political value. Meanwhile, the reflection itself, in its implementation, in this context, leaves a taste of suspicion and feeds the prejudice that the change will be temporary. In response to this gesture, the Socialists must feel obliged to provide lasting and convincing proof that extends beyond the timeframe of the campaign and the electoral situation. Their leaders’ overcoming of this “gambl” would at the same time mark a victory over the harsh test of distrust and moral decline that society demands day after day during this term.
