Without needing to act as the majority’s advocate, but starting from the premises it has itself proclaimed, its current role in directing the police force after the constitution of a civilian police, which in today’s conditions seems distant, cannot be more limited than half of the remaining term of government. Soon or later, in confrontation with the PS strategy within itself, a strange weekly situation seems to be forming only with regard to police administration. This makes the fact clearer that the rotation of the police command guard in the districts, which instinctively have opposed it, is becoming not only an administrative issue, but one connected to local candidacies. This has caused, even at the head of police commissariats and local directorates, in many of them, especially in the south, movements dependent on party developments and not necessarily on professional standards. In this context, the audit report has gained importance and is being made public on the eve of the local elections. It not only strikes at abuses of funds, but also serves as an instrument of political pressure. Perhaps here lies the knot of this public debate over police independence and its electoral use.
