Meta - Olbrajt, or bilateral cooperation
BY MARTIN LEKA
The decision that the Albanian prime minister, Ilir Meta, is in the U.S. has been confirmed by the media and political analysts, but the scope of the assistance so far, and especially the cooperation of programs drawn up in this sphere, remains unclear. A special addition to this file, for now, is the arrival of the American mission chief stationed in Tirana, who is in the hands of the highest-ranking organizations. The negotiations stemming from the deepening crisis, the stabilizations and failures, are of importance because the delays created in the field of diplomatic partnership have led the U.S. to engage strongly both with the Albanian government and with other political forces. So far, U.S. assessments of the Albanian government have been muted, but being convinced that there is a crisis, they are more warnings to be taken into account in the future. The expansion of American programs and of interest in Albanian stability should be seen as an indication of a relationship that may go beyond declarations and may also touch more sensitive areas. If high-level visits turn this spirit into concrete action, then it is expected that Tirana-Washington relations will enter a new phase.
