Athens does not delay!

The clash between some Albanian citizens and the Greek police in Kakavijë was the main reason the Greek government decided to speed up the departure of Albanian emigrants from Greece. The Greek side has begun carrying out its order to move the emigrants by bus from its territory to Kakavijë, where there is also the temporary center for return to the homeland. According to our information, the Greek side began the bus transfers toward Kakavijë a day earlier, where dozens of Albanian emigrants in the early hours of yesterday were placed in front of the offices of the Albanian police. This action by the Greek authorities was taken to avoid the rough gathering of Albanians following the refusal of entry into Greece. News from the early hours of the morning from Athens revealed that all cities of the Greek state from Larisa to Halkidhiki and the islands of Crete, Rhodes, and Mykonos are clearing out all Albanians caught without documents and sending them toward the border with Albania. It is expected that within the next 24 hours, according to the Albanian police, around 500 more Albanian emigrants will arrive. Greek Prime Minister Simitis held talks yesterday with the President of Greece, Stefanopulos, to analyze the situation, and in the afternoon he left for Brussels. Yesterday the Greek police was very distracted while units of the Greek army were seen moving. This has created fear among Albanians, since from time to time the conduct of elections in Greece is becoming a reason for consequences for Albanians themselves. The Greek side found its excuse in Kasaj; at times its government declared in harsh tones that it would continue the internments. Our informants at the border showed that movements along the border with Greece are increasing. What burst forth as an incidental border incident seems to warrant consideration for new events that will also affect the future climate in Greece. The days remaining in this pre-election campaign for the local elections have made it clear that the government led by Simitis will have difficulty calming the situation created, especially if the new government must be recomposed in coalition with another party. For this reason, the Greek government seems to be using, on the one hand, the argument of the spreading extremism on the outskirts and, on the other, keeping alive the harsh climate of internments. The biggest debate for Albanians in these moments among observers has led to the conclusion that this wave of internments will certainly last a long time, while Greece on its part is keeping the true situation hidden. Kasaj most likely has been one of the beneficiaries of this situation, and therefore the government is finding in his style an example to encourage other irredentists.
