The obstructive illness of the opposition

BY MARTIN LEKA When the American ambassador presented the Ahtisaari plan for the third time to the government and the Albanian opposition and the KLA for a political solution to the crisis in Kosovo, public opinion noticed that the main condition of the PD leader, Sali Berisha, was that all his demands toward the government be approved. This was an ironic sign that Albanian internal political relations were still playing a stronger role than the interest of the national cause. Today’s opposition, instead of presenting itself as a governing alternative, continues to condition every development on its internal conflict with power. The problem is not a critical stance toward the government, but the lack of a positive vision for the country. Albania needs a modern opposition that would compete with ideas and not with blockages, that would offer programs and not merely anti-government passions. So far, the opposition’s identity crisis has been shown in its inability to build public trust and articulate a convincing alternative. Instead, the opposition has often reduced itself to emotional appeals and attempts to delegitimize institutional processes. This makes it incapable of taking on new political responsibilities and keeps it captive to the past. An opposition that does not break away from the language of conflict cannot win either the trust of citizens or the respect of international partners. For this reason, the opposition’s problem is not only electoral, but cultural and moral. It must free itself from the permanent siege mentality, accept the rules of democratic competition, and move beyond the logic of sabotage. Only then can it become a true factor of political stability in the country.
