BY FERDINAND XHAFERRI As has often happened lately, the Albanian Parliament was once again presented for approval with the changes to the government cabinet made just a few days earlier. Without wishing to analyze the prime minister’s executive aims with these changes, I think the latest ritual of renovating the Albanian Executive’s building has clearly revealed how relations have shifted between the two main groups in the party that likes to call itself pink. After the highly balanced Congress of the Socialist Party, Meta would choose the strategy of quickly establishing his profile at the head of the Executive. To achieve this objective, among many other actions, in every government reshuffle he has appointed ministers who had temporarily been serving as advisers, simply to better accommodate the demands of the head of the Executive. This has brought about the emergence of a prime minister with unquestioned authority, perhaps a positive development given the many problems of the transition. Meanwhile, Nano will pursue the path of strengthening his position in the party. Known as a politician who has raised the art of laying long-term traps to a high level, it can be said that Nano has not only dismantled the consolidated opposition against him, but has also established complete dominance within the party structures. Thus Meta, by promoting unspent figures, has increased public support for himself; in relation to Nano, this means he has begun a battle he had already won, but has lost a great deal within the party.
