Vasi Melo, a knife in the back for the Meta government
The Prime Minister: We can no longer govern with such a party
The violence that costs Albania
The political-state crisis once again in Albania. In truth, an unexpected outbreak, but dense with long-standing problems. This evening in Tirana, the President of the country, Rexhep Meidani, has asked Prime Minister Ilir Meta to account for the serious situation in the country, while the prime minister has met with OSCE representatives, whose statements he has met with disbelief. Meanwhile, in the session of the Assembly of Albania, two important sessions from these days have also been postponed: the one on the dismissal of SHIK chairman Arben Karkini and the session on the 8 ministers dismissed and appointed by the previous government, due to the absence of the right-wing opposition in البرلمان.
Is everyone on their feet? [sic?] It is clear that the political-state situation is unfortunately truly taking on serious tones. First of all, there is no longer any doubt about the inevitable conflict between the President of the Republic and the Prime Minister. If the Albanian political situation continues to worsen, it will lead to an institutional muddle and the executive in Tirana will completely lose its strength. The lack of a central authoritative decision-making center and of a single, unquestionable voice at government level could lead to the loss of control over the situation in the country. Then this governmental muddle leads to quarrels and conflicts in the left-wing coalition, in which, so far, only the shooting has temporarily ceased. And finally there are other factors that feed the country toward further sliding into chaos. "As if it were wanted," one of the few Socialists who still retains a sense of realism in politics said a day earlier. Everything is moving toward the peak, such a muffled [?] or forewarned chaos from the recent events in Tropojë.
The old "avalanche" has been unleashed, hiding a powerful wave of left-wing violence. Another wave of violence has brought with it a tendency toward hatred. Which is spreading before everyone's eyes. Which is making it increasingly difficult for institutions to govern the country. Is this or is this not happening? Such a push is given by things. What makes it very clear is that parliamentary dialogue must never be disregarded. For some time this dialogue has been in crisis. For some time relations between the majority and the opposition have been broken. But there is also another, more decisive issue: the increasingly visible breakdown of the relationship between the forces of government and those of the system of checks and balances. The President, the parliamentary majority, the government, even the opposition are moving like separate islands. This situation, instead of being corrected, is turning into a dangerous element for the state itself.
Let it be clear: violence does not only cost human lives. It also costs Albania itself. It costs its international image, its integration, its democratic stability. If the impression prevails that governments can be overthrown by force here, institutions can be blocked with weapons, and constitutional rules can be trampled whenever it suits someone, then Albania loses far more than an internal political battle.
