Chairman of the Democratic League of Kosovo, Ibrahim Rugova, on our mission

At a time when the search for Kosovo's path is under way, when new forms of relations with Albania are being sought, and efforts are being made to reconceptualize a democratic Kosovo, Kosovo's representative, the chairman of the Democratic League of Kosovo, Dr. Ibrahim Rugova, came to Albania and spoke with the leaders of the Democratic Party of Albania. He underlined that his arrival in Albania, at these difficult moments, has a special importance. During his visit he met with the leaders of the Democratic Party, with intellectuals and with representatives of Albanian democratic opinion. The chairman of the Democratic League of Kosovo stressed the need for cooperation and for establishing new ties between Kosovo and Albania in the service of democratic processes. Ibrahim Rugova spoke about the situation in Kosovo and the aspirations of the Albanian people there for freedom, democracy and national dignity.

Three days to bring down a bust and a bridge

Political diary Monday, 18 February. Students, teachers, workers and citizens, dissatisfied with the dragging out of the democratic process and with the failure to meet their demands, begin numerous protests. Tuesday, 19 February. Gatherings continue in the central square. The security forces and the authorities try to stop the movement, but the demonstrators are determined. Wednesday, 20 February. The symbol of the dictatorship is brought down. The bust of Enver Hoxha is toppled amid cheers and extraordinary emotion. This act was experienced as the end of an era and the beginning of a new time for Albania. (continues on page 5)
