The core of our program[?] We described the path of democratic reform in Albania and relied on internal forces. Thanks to the commitment of the new government, the country’s economy and finances were stabilized. The situation creates conditions for the continuation of reforms. The present and the future are in our hands. 22 March was the greatest event Albania had known in centuries. Its victory brought the final collapse of the communist dictatorship and opened the road to democracy. On this anniversary we remember with honor and respect those who voted for change, those who endured sacrifice and repression, and those who remained faithful to the ideal of freedom.

With the wish and good will of the majority of Albanians we won. We democratized our country, gave voice to the free vote, opened the way for the law and political pluralism. At the foundation of this victory lies the sacrifice of ordinary people, of citizens who were not frightened by threats and repression. This road is not easy. There are difficulties, poverty, and wounds inherited from the past. But we believe that with work, honesty, and dedication we will lead Albania toward well-being. We have taken on the task of leading Albania into the waters of freedom and well-being. (continues on page 7)

One year of struggle and victory Islam [Iljaz?] Hoxha amazes us and lifts the spirit of the Albanians[?] Albanians, by watching television from Western countries, especially Italian programs, hear what is happening in their own country. The peaceful and democratic conditions were won with many sacrifices. The victory of 22 March 1992 overthrew communism. It opened a new stage, with hope and confidence. Today we are striving to build the rule of law, the market economy, and the institutions of freedom. The difficulties are great, but our people have patience and willpower. Albania can no longer remain hostage to the past. The duty of the political class is to preserve national unity and accelerate reforms. (continues on page 4)
