In the present case, the defeat of the Socialist Party in the by-elections has made it unavoidable to raise the question of responsibility of its chairman, Fatos Nano. A political force that aspires to govern the country must show signs of seriousness and reform. Holding the party hostage to personal interests, stubbornness, or narrow calculations harms not only the opposition, but also Albania’s democratic life. Mr. Nano’s resignation would be a civic and political act, a necessary step for the revitalization of the PS and for the creation of a more responsible opposition.
