On 26 March in Kavajë, with the enthusiasm and patriotic spirit of democracy and the citizens, a commemorative event was organized on the occasion of the 3rd anniversary of the outbreak of the anti-communist revolt in Albania, to honor the martyrs of democracy, the fallen martyrs, and the invincible fighters for freedom and democracy. Everyone now knows that Kavajë is the place where, on 26 March 1990, the fuse of the democratic revolution was lit for the first time. From that day on, an entire people took to the streets, rose up against the dictatorship, and opened the way to political pluralism and the fall of communism. Taking part in this anniversary were the President of the Republic, Mr. Sali Berisha, the Prime Minister, Mr. Aleksandër Meksi, the Speaker of Parliament Pjetër Arbnori, ministers, deputies, representatives of local government, relatives of the martyrs, and thousands of citizens of Kavajë. In the main square, commemorative speeches were delivered, wreaths of flowers were laid, and the victims of communism were honored in remembrance. First phase of housing privatization

FRENCH EMBASSY IN TIRANA Kavajë was yesterday the city where the campaign for the privatization of housing and the distribution of ownership certificates began. The ceremony was held in the presence of local and central authorities, as well as diplomatic representatives. The privatization process is considered one of the fundamental reforms of the transition, aiming to give citizens the right to property and to encourage individual responsibility in the management of assets. This first phase includes state housing built before the final years of the communist regime. The authorities stated that the procedures will be carried out transparently and at an affordable cost for beneficiary families. Continues on page 8

ASK FOR YOUR RESIGNATION, MR. FATOS NANO!

-This is in the interest of the PS and of Albania- Political customs and the norms of civic ethics require that any politician in a modern country, after a heavy electoral defeat, take responsibility and step down from the leadership of the party. In the present case, the defeat of the Socialist Party in the by-elections has made it unavoidable to raise the question of responsibility of its chairman, Fatos Nano. A political force that aspires to govern the country must show signs of seriousness and reform. Holding the party hostage to personal interests, stubbornness, or narrow calculations harms not only the opposition, but also Albania’s democratic life. Mr. Nano’s resignation would be a civic and political act, a necessary step for the revitalization of the PS and for the creation of a more responsible opposition. Those who truly love the Socialist Party must have the courage to call for change at its top. NSOLF-CS
