THE PRESIDENT OF THE REPUBLIC HITS THE DEMOCRATS WITH HIS FIST

NATIONAL TEAM IN THE USA On Wednesday, Mr. Sali Berisha, together with a group of young democrats (PD), held a working lunch with Mr. Tom Meli, Director for the Mediterranean, the Balkans and Central and Eastern Europe at the U.S. National Security Council, and Mr. Charles Thomas, adviser at the U.S. State Department on issues of democracy in Albania. If the harshness of presidential propaganda and pseudo-nationalism is part of the electoral conjuncture, aimed at replacing by theft and manipulation the votes won over the last four years through fabricated patriotism, then this runs counter to the will of all Albanians, who do not accept that the interests of the ruling party be identified with the interests of the nation. On the other hand, we cannot fail to express deep concern over the ongoing degradation of state institutions and political life in our country. The President of the Republic, who according to the Constitution should stand above the parties, is increasingly openly appearing as the leader of a political force, using the language of hatred and threats against political opponents. This unacceptable behavior by the head of state is creating a serious climate of tension, mistrust and division in Albanian society. It is unforgivable that, instead of guaranteeing the rules of the democratic game and the independence of institutions, the President is fueling political conflict and trying to justify governance failures with nationalist rhetoric. We demand that democratic standards be respected, pressure on the opposition and the free media be stopped, and that practices of intimidation and political blackmail come to an end. Albania needs strong and credible institutions, not a cult of personality and authoritarian adventure. (ATSH)

HIGH-LEVEL CORRUPTION UNDER ATTACK FROM THE DEMOCRATS

-After the Ameti scandal, other former top officials in corruption networks- -Alia and Çarçani are under arrest. What will happen with Nano? Former top officials of the communist regime and of the last socialist government have been arrested on corruption charges. These are the news items that are occupying an increasingly visible place every day in the media. As can be seen from the photos and official data, the justice authorities are continuing investigations into embezzlement, abuse of public funds and illegal gains. Can it already be called a bitter truth that corruption was part of the machinery of the old government? Instead of control, accountability and public responsibility, we have seen privileges, arbitrariness and the rapid enrichment of a handful of people. That is why public opinion is persistently demanding that these affairs be fully exposed. The investigation process must not stop at the names that have already become public. The law must apply equally to everyone, and no one can hide behind yesterday's positions or today's influence. In this context, the naturally arising question is: what will happen with Nano? The public expects justice, not revenge; the punishment of the guilty, not a political spectacle. Only a rule-of-law state capable of striking corruption at the highest levels can restore citizens' trust and mark a clear break with the past. EDI LALLOKA

MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT OF THE REPUBLIC, ADDRESSED TO ORTHODOX BELIEVERS ON THE OCCASION OF EASTER

I am truly happy to greet you today, representatives of a community striving to preserve peace and prosperity. The Autocephalous Orthodox Church of Albania, after many years of prohibition and ruin, is rising again to its feet and breathing freely in its own land. For all Christians, Easter is a symbol of resurrection, of the victory of life over death, of hope over despair. This great feast invites us all to reflect on the values of understanding, forgiveness and human love, so necessary for our society in this difficult time of transition. Let this holy day be an opportunity to strengthen interfaith harmony, increase solidarity among citizens, and build together a better future for Albania. SALI BERISHA

WHO IS RESPONSIBLE FOR ABOUT 13 MILLION DOLLARS LOST?

-Nano gives jobs to the unemployed and to the suspicious- -Will Levan revive 2/3 of industry? Is the blocking of Nano enough?[-] -Usurers on fraudulent debt Under the previous government, wrong economic decisions were taken that cost the country large sums in foreign currency. Today, as the Albanian economy is trying to recover under difficult conditions, the public has the right to know where the millions of dollars ended up and who bears responsibility for the losses caused. The case of Levan, the failed industrial projects and the suspicious appointments in the administration are presented as part of a broader picture of mismanagement and irresponsibility. The criticism is directed especially at Fatos Nano, about whom questions are raised regarding his role in these developments and his ability to provide convincing explanations. If it is really a matter of about 13 million dollars lost, then the relevant authorities must seriously investigate every document, every decision and every individual responsibility. Avoiding the truth and downplaying the damage would amount to another injustice against Albanian citizens. SHPETIM LUKU

OUR PEASANT IS NOT FOOLED BY THE BOLSHEVIK BRIGADIERS FROM THE SOCIALISTS OF "ZP"

On March 20, 1991, more than 300 head of livestock died on the farm of the Levan agricultural cooperative. They died after being fed a mixture prepared without any technical or hygienic standards. The matter became the subject of investigations, but for a long time it was kept obscure by the responsible officials of the time. The chief of agriculture at the time, referred to by the author as a "Bolshevik brigadier," is still trying to evade responsibility and deceive public opinion with propagandistic articles in "ZP". But the peasant knows the truth. He knows well how property was handled, how decisions were made, and who benefited from the chaos created in the countryside. Today, as the privatization of land and agricultural equipment has entered a new phase, it is essential that the past not be hidden. Only by bringing concrete responsibilities to light can the peasant's trust be won and a free, efficient agricultural economy be built. MUFIT SUPRAVA
