THE PEOPLE OF LIBRESHË: REALISTIC ABOUT TODAY, OPTIMISTIC ABOUT TOMORROW
Eduard Selami, Tritan Shehu, Jup Hasko, one day detached
in Libofshë
-The PS believes in the fantastic promise, the PD in the cost of change
-From Libofshë during the last 2 years...
As I descended the old steps of the executive committee[?], in the midst of our busy day devoted to holding an electoral meeting with the inhabitants of Libofshë, the journalist in me brought to mind the famous Albanian painter Ibrahim Kodra. "Take me to Libofshë!" - he had pleaded with his friend, a cooperative member[?] from this region, when, after a long and stormy time away from his homeland, he had returned to Albania for the first time in 45 years. There was the home of his family, the people closest and dearest to him. We too were there for them. The men from the government cabinet and the party who had taken the road to Fier and Libofshë to meet the people of an important area of Myzeqe. Two years earlier these people had been among the most determined for the great political and economic change. They had embraced the Democratic Party with both heart and vote. Today we wanted to hear their voice, to understand how they saw the present and the future.
On this warm spring day, the streets of Libofshë seemed calm, but the words of its people were full of energy and realism. People were not promising miracles. They asked for work, water, roads, a market, school, order. They spoke about difficulties, but also about what had changed. There was more freedom, more opportunity to speak, to work the land, to build life with one’s own strength.
Many of them expressed anger at the big, unsupported promises that, in their view, came from the opposition. "Fantastic promises do not feed us," said an elderly man. "We want work and a fair sharing of sacrifice." The young wanted hope, but not deception. Women spoke about prices, the family economy, and their children’s education. Everyone wanted a stronger state and an administration closer to the citizen.
Eduard Selami, Tritan Shehu and Jup Hasko took part in the open conversations with the inhabitants. They listened carefully and spoke about reforms, about the inevitable difficulties of the transition, about the need for change not to be interrupted. It was said that the road is difficult, that costs exist, but that turning back would be heavier than any sacrifice today. The people of Libofshë seemed convinced that the future is not built with empty words, but with work and trust.
At the end of the meeting, the impression that remained was clear: the people of Libofshë are realistic about today and optimistic about tomorrow.
