Yesterday afternoon, the Secretary
General of PDSH, Mr. Tritan
Shehu, held a working meeting with
the leadership of the PD Branch in Skrapar,
which was opened by the chairman, Qamil Cirza.
He described the work done so far
in this district, emphasizing the
micro-organization of the sections and
the sections’ role in expanding the
support base of the democratic
alternative, and the drafting of the
work program and its implementation in
the most fruitful way possible, as well as the commitment of each
democratic activist to carrying out
the tasks so as to be able to
confront the electorate and win its support,
and to address the most sensitive
social issues during the transition period
so that they are resolved correctly, quickly,
within possibilities, and answer the
false promises. Ongoing work with people concluded
- The struggle must be broadened in
those directions that condition
the realization of the freedom and rights
of each of them.
Meanwhile, Mr. Tritan
Shehu took the floor, describing
individualization as one of the most valuable
values of Albanian democracy. He explained
that it clearly shows that, now in our country,
the personality of the free person is being
strengthened and crystallized as a result of the overthrow of
the dictatorship of the proletariat,
the institutionalization of democracy,
the creation and consolidation of
the market economy, and the ongoing
launch of reforms in all directions regardless
of the circumstances, in the conditions of
the possibilities to broaden freedom,
in all its dimensions. This,
Mr. Tritan Shehu stressed, shows that,
in a very short period,
mentalities, psychology, and concepts of
the individual have changed and therefore, our
democratic alternative must
adapt to this quality in order to
secure victory in the forthcoming elections,
because today’s Albanian person
trusts the correctness of
the program of that political force that

President Berisha
welcomes the Israel-
Palestine declaration
President of the Republic Sali Berisha sent yesterday, through a
telegram, his best wishes to U.S. President Clinton, Israeli Prime
Minister Rabin and Palestinian leader Arafat for the joint declaration
signed yesterday in Washington.
President Berisha considered this an important step
toward reaching a final peace agreement in
the Middle East.

Albanian socialists
more divided than ever
B. KASMI
As had been announced, yesterday under the leadership of
first deputy chairman Servet Pellumbi, the PS Steering Committee held
its meeting. The PS Steering Committee had the following agenda:
1. The law on genocide and its consequences for
the Socialist Party.
2. Re-evaluation of the previous meeting of the
PS Steering Committee.
3. The PS congress meeting, the tactics that
must be followed until it is held.
4. The latest attacks from Europe and the USA
against the PS, the failure of the Dokle–D'Alema meeting, etc.
The meeting was opened by comrade Servet Pellumbi, who, as
confirmed by the PS KD agency, harshly attacked the newly approved
law on genocide. However, Pellumbi did not show himself to be impartial
toward the comrades who would suffer the consequences of this law.
Pellumbi reassured the comrades present, victims of this law, that they
have made history, not only in the PS. Pellumbi stated on this point that,
if these comrades are not elected (for the sake of their deeds in the
remote and recent past - ed. note) in the next Parliament, I guarantee
them that they will be elected in the PS parliament.
Comrade Servet’s speech caused reactions
during the PS KD meeting. It is learned that
Mrs. Nano and comrades Ruçi, Brokaj, Zeqo reacted sharply.
They called Pellumbi’s speech and Dokle’s silence “pure hypocrisy”
and made public their stance against the genocide law.
The platform proposed by the above individuals consisted of the practice of leaflets,
the use of violence, etc. As sources inside the PS
report, Mrs. Nano conveyed the platform of the previously tested and fully
failed path. Meanwhile, the other group of
deputies Ajazi, Koçi, Maço, etc. are acting
against both sides. For them, the red nomenklatura
and the former security apparatus must not play any role
in Albanian politics. It was this statement by the
above-mentioned that triggered Gramoz Ruçi’s threatening outburst. In the party room,
while grinding his teeth like a hardened security man,
Gramoz Ruçi uttered, seemingly (but only seemingly)
several meaningless words such as: Shekën, Tomori,
Gaforja, Cibuku, Iriqi, Gjinkalla, Debatiku,
Portokalli, Limoni, Vreshta, Sazani,
Kitara, Gjaja, Kalemi, etc.
The room was overtaken by a deathly silence.
After a period lasting about 3 minutes,
Quajsoi broke the silence with his question to Loçë:
“Who is your own Psonudoni?!” Meanwhile,
it is learned that Ruçi, pompous,
unmoved by the absolute calm that prevailed in the hall,
sat down in his seat with a triumphant look. But it was not meant to end there.
The group of opposing deputies advanced with the second point of the meeting,
objecting to Marxism in the PS program,
while the “healthy” part demanded their condemnation.
Regarding the tactics to be followed, contradictory positions were again noted.
Ruçi was an ardent supporter of the tactic of boycotting parliament and local government by PS representatives.
Sources claim that there were clashes in the meeting also over the option of following the legal path.
Meanwhile Pellumbi and Dokle called for a combination of the two proposed paths.
As for the point on the congress meeting, the debate took place in a very heated atmosphere.
The law on genocide was raised in the leading forums as the hottest issue, which
prevented those present from reaching a consensus. Now Ruçi too, directly affected by the law, was not consistent with his own opinion.
The meeting decided that the congress should be discussed only at a future meeting, perhaps at the next meeting,
which was decided to be held after two weeks. In any case, it was heard in the place of comrade
Meta that the last issue on the agenda, when he said that indeed from Western politicians
there were anti-PS reactions to stops intended to convince Albanians to vote for us.
His discussion caused a reaction from Bokaj, who evoked the words of '90–'91,
which according to him must have been a year of success (remember Nano at the airport after
returning from England - editor’s note)
Meanwhile the meeting had become almost completely heated.
Tired, and above all divided, the leaders of the PS went their separate ways.

Malaysian defence minister in Tirana
Malaysian defence minister in
Tirana
Within the framework of the cooperation relations between the Ministry of
Defense of the Republic of Albania and the Ministry of
defense of Malaysia, yesterday arrived in Tirana, for a three-day visit,
the Malaysian defense minister,
Datuk Syed Ahmad Albar.
During his stay in
Albania, the Malaysian minister will be received by his Albanian counterpart,
Mr. Safe Zhull, by Prime Minister
Meksi, and by the Chief of the General
Staff of the Army, General
Sheme Kosova.
Many meetings for Serreqi in New York
Many meetings for
Serreqi in New York
During his stay in New
York, the Albanian Foreign Minister,
Mr. Alfred Serreqi, met this day
with several heads of delegations from other countries
and with high-level political figures,
who are taking part in the proceedings of the 50th Session of the
UN General Assembly.
At the meeting with the Minister of
Foreign Affairs of Sweden, Mr.
Alfred Serreqi, discussing the situation in the former Yugoslavia,
he raised the problems of Kosovo and emphasized the views of the Albanian Government
that the final solution of the conflict in the region cannot
be achieved without solving the problem of Kosovo. The Swedish side
supported the idea of deploying monitors in Kosovo and also expressed
its government’s support for Albania’s association agreement
with the European Union.
At the meeting with the Minister of
Foreign Affairs of Israel,
Peres, with whom he discussed issues in an open and unbiased manner.
Although our priority is European integration,
he stressed, we are also members of the
UN and we likewise have a priority in increasing cooperation
with Syria.
In this context we note
that there are common things between our countries. In Syria
lives an Albanian community that is highly respected and integrated
into the life of the country. The two counterparts also discussed
the situation in the former Yugoslavia, the peace plan,
and the situation in Kosovo, where the key is understanding among all parties.
At the meeting with the Minister of
Foreign Affairs of Belgium,
Minister Serreqi informed his Belgian counterpart about the progress
of reforms in Albania and spoke about cooperation between the two countries
and within multilateral organizations and forums.
Mr. Serreqi, after noting that
full integration into Europe and NATO is Albania’s priority,
asked for Belgium’s support in achieving this priority. He referred
to the possibility of opening negotiations between Albania and the EU
for the signing of an association agreement and asked for the support of the Belgian government.
Then Minister Serreqi dwelt in particular on the situation in Kosovo.
In turn, the Belgian minister thanked Minister Serreqi for his trust,
underlining the fact that Belgium is interested in the Kosovo issue and that
Albania, the EU, and the region are simply present.
At the meeting with the Minister of
Foreign Affairs of Colombia,
the Albanian foreign minister pointed out at the outset that the two countries had just

EDI PALOKA
PS deputy chairman Meta has tried to refute
“RD” for the fact that the PS is unacceptable
and beyond the European left. Asked
by “Populli Po” about the fact published
in “RD” that D’Alema, secretary of the PDSI, did not agree to meet
Dokle, Meta stated: “That is not true... We met the head
of foreign relations, Mr. Pierino
Fasino”. (as if Fasino were
D’Alema’s second surname)
But in an interview published
also yesterday in Populli Po, when asked whether
the PS would be admitted to the
Socialist International next spring when the congress is held, the deputy
chairman of the PS and head of foreign relations of the PS,
Ilir Meta, answered: “This is an issue about which it is far
too early to discuss.. Admission
to the International will be the result
of progress, but more important
is that the PS be accepted by the
Albanian people”
E. Hoxha did nothing more for 50 years;
he declared war on the whole world and forced the Albanian
people to applaud and cheer for him. But Meta forgets that Albanians
are no longer the same as 5 or 10 years
ago to applaud a party
that even today defends genocide and
hopes to bring back into Albanian life the principles
that destroyed Albania for 50 years. Albanians
cannot accept, as Meta says, a party that is not accepted by the democratic world,
since they have seen what isolation means.
Or could it be that the leaders of the PS will
teach Albanians again
to eat grass, but not to violate the principles!
