Albania among the first candidates to be admitted to the Council of Europe
The opinion that will be discussed in the Parliamentary Assembly on 6 February, concerning the further steps to definitively establish the presence of the Council of Europe in our country.
According to the special guest of Albania in the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, Mr. Aleksander Meksi, our country will be represented at this session by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Alfred Serreqi.
The rapporteur for Albania, Mr. Andreas Khol, the rapporteur on Albania’s membership in the Council of Europe in the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe and vice-president of the Group of the European People’s Party in that Assembly, in an interview given to our newspaper on 31 January 1995 regarding Albania’s membership in the Council of Europe, emphasized that there were every reason to believe that the Parliamentary Assembly would give unanimous approval to Albania’s membership.
In Andreas Khol’s report, distributed to the Assembly deputies, it is underlined that with the current government and with the President of the Republic, our country has made great strides and that in some areas democracy is functioning well. Asked what position would be taken because some points in Albanian legislation still do not fully correspond to the requirements of the Council of Europe, Mr. Khol stresses that no one demands perfection in a young democracy. He states that the institutions of democracy in Albania are moving forward at a certain pace and along a certain path. As for the fact that the Albanian government has respected the recommendations of the 61[?] and in some cases has made corrections according to the remarks of the Council of Europe, the rapporteur for Albania considers this significant.

Meeting of the National Council of LDGSH
On Wednesday, 3 February 1995, the National Council of LDGSH met, with the agenda including the election of the vice-president of LDGSH and the election of the secretariat. The Council also strongly assessed the current political situation in Albania and in Kosovo.
In his speech, the chairman of LDGSH, Mr. Shpëtim Daja, stated that politically the force he leads is positioned in the right-wing opposition and that this position must be manifested in as coherent stances as possible in all its actions. He also stated that the traditional right-wing front and the center-right are the result of a natural evolution. According to him, in view of the stage through which our country is now passing, any reformulation of the boundaries of a political camp according to the model of improvised coalitions is wrong and anachronistic. “We must not disregard the historic chance to create a clear structure of the right-wing forces. Emphasizing that cooperation with left-wing forces for an electoral coalition does not serve the mission of the right-wing alternative,” said Mr. Daja.
The following were elected to the new secretariat of the National Council of LDGSH: Mr. Pjetër Arbnori, Mr. Bujar Leskaj, Mr. Sali Shehu, Mr. Artan Kopani and Mr. Bardhyl Mahmuti.
