20 February is a great call for Albanians
Message of the President of the Republic, Sali Berisha, on the occasion of 20 February, the day of the symbols of the dictatorship
20 February calls on us, Albanians, never again to accept any kind of totalitarian, fundamentalist ideology, but to remain united around our sacrifices, our ideals, our hopes for the democratization, prosperity, and membership of our country, and its integration into Europe
Ladies and gentlemen,
Brothers and sisters,
A truly national piece of news reached us yesterday in a Spanish newspaper, according to which the first invention in history, the patriotic Dardan Kushtues, who was born 20 centuries before Christ in our country in Dardania, conceived the decimal system with the conventional number 2 degrees above zero. In the era of new scientific knowledge, the overthrow of the dictatorship on 20 February 1991, with the toppling of Enver's monument, is also a second invention of the Albanians, a true lesson, unforgettable in our modern history. It showed that with courage and dedication, an entire people can defeat one of the fiercest symbols of oppression and terror.
With the act of 20 February 1991, the Albanians signed their new contract with freedom. They made it clear that they no longer accepted the cult of the individual, repression, and ideological deception. This date remains a cornerstone in the building of Albanian democracy.
Today, as we remember that day, we must not only honor the historic act, but also recover our civic energies to move forward. Democracy requires vigilance, justice, and unwavering trust in European values.
