The pits of horror
One of the macabre testimonies of communist genocide
The pits of horror
5 severed heads, buried separately
5 headless skeletons in another pit
THE SKULLS OF THE VICTIMS WHO FELL INTO THE MASS GRAVES OF BERAT
MENTOR SHEHU
In Berat yesterday two mass-grave pits
of the victims of the communist regime
were uncovered. The first, on the
outskirts, in the place called “Uznova e
Madhe”, where skeletons were found
bound with iron.
The second, at the old dispensary of
Berat, again 4 bodies still
unidentified.
But the most monstrous pit, a symbol
of communist macabre horror, is the
third one, the one that was discovered
by chance at “Bosonet e Buze Lumit”
near the old sports field: 5 skulls
without body skeletons, and in another
pit. 5–6 meters from the first, 5
skeletons without skulls.
It was the killer Napolon Qafa who,
during the excavation of the foundation
of the villa he used in the aforementioned
place, accidentally discovered a human
skull. With the care of an archaeologist,
but with anguish and sorrow, he
discovered that there were some half-
severed heads beside one another and
four other skulls, two of which had a
bullet hole in them.
After this, Napolon informed the Berat
Association of the Politically Repressed
about what he had discovered. The
chairman of the association tells me
that from the moment we saw it we
were convinced that this is what we saw
with our own eyes.
Five skulls, only five skulls, one of
them even more damaged than the
others.
5 skulls that wanted to tell us of five
anti-communist heads cut from their
bodies.
Our first concern, the first question that
arose, was: where are the bones? We
asked Mr. Napolon Qafa to suspend the
construction, which he accepted without
hesitation, in order not only to search for
the five skeletons belonging to the 5
skulls found. And no more than 5–6 m
from the first pit they found five
headless skeletons.
The interlocutors from the Association
of the Politically Repressed tell us that
they still have not identified them, but:
we are working, and with the help of
specialists, taking as our starting point
the facts, the photographs of the
political prisoners shot, whose graves
have still not been found, the court
files and records collected from various
witnesses, we think and hope that
these victims too will have their names,
so that the families may have a grave
for their relatives where they can light a
candle for their tormented soul, place a
flower in their memory.
So far it is believed that the pit where
the five skulls were discovered dates
from the years 1945–52, but this is only
a supposition. But that they are victims
of communism and that, with their heads
cut off from their bodies, terror was
exercised against the regime's
opponents bound with iron, of that there
is no doubt. Thus these exhausted
people from the prisons of the
communist dictatorship conclude the
conversation.
As I leave with a feeling of anxiety and
horror, I am left with the shattering
feeling that the criminals of the red
dictatorship have gone beyond crime,
into the boundaries of primitive
cannibalism.

Yesterday afternoon, the Secretary General of
PDSH, Mr. Tritan Shehu, held a meeting with
members and supporters of PD at the Agricultural
University of Kamza. Present were the Chairman
of the PD branch, Tirana, Mr. Albert Broka, the
Rector of the Agricultural University of Kamza,
Mr. Besnik Gjonçeçi, and the Chairman of the
FRPDSh, Mr. Afrim Krasniqi.
The meeting was opened by the Chairman of the
PD branch for the students of Kamza, Mr. Gjok
Vuksani, who underlined the role and duties that
young democratic intellectuals have in the service
of consolidating democracy, continuing and
speeding up the pace of reform. And, what
remains most important, he concluded, is the
increase in the dedication of every democratic
activist to the defense and realization of the
ideals of the right, as a necessity that enables the
avoidance of the negative effects of the unfair
political struggle of the Marxist opposition to the
detriment of the country’s freedom and progress.
Then the Secretary General took the floor

Terror once again. Heads separated
from bodies, buried in mass graves,
skulls shattered by bullets fired into the
eyes of the victims, and bones still
bound by handcuffs. These are the
most shocking testimonies of the great
crime called communism; they are the
guts of a sadistic order.
Another mass grave is being uncovered
in Berat. Five heads separated from
the bodies are buried further on and
still further another pit. Innocent victims
who were not executed, but
barbarically massacred. And it could
not have been otherwise in a system
where the innocent were made victims
of criminals, and criminals were
decorated and made careers based on
the number of victims they massacred.
It was anti-humanity that prepared to
implement Man. Whereas today the
progeny of crime dare to come out on
tribunes and howl only because for six
years their ties will no longer sit in the
seats of power. And these tolerance
levels enter the boundaries of
barbarism. How many of the victims
who are now found scattered in the
pits of horror were massacred by the
decisions handed down by the judges
of the dictatorship, some of whom
today also occupy a parliamentary seat.
The SP? How many of the victims were
made prey to the hatred of the time
when the passions of the Sigurimi were
directed and ordered by those who
today lead the SP? That is why today
they, progeny of crime, who loom at
the head of a party spawned by the
monster of dictatorship, shamelessly
rise once again in defense of genocide.
It is understandable; for them, the
killing of innocents is not considered a
crime. For them, crime is a way of life.
The fact that in “ZP” the criminals of
the Sigurimi are described as “heroes”,
that the killings that occurred (during 50
years of...) are not considered a crime,
that such terrible things are propagated
now, that criminals like H. Peçi and his
criminal allies are described as
“heroic”, etc., etc., proves very clearly
that for these beings the killing of
innocent people and the mutilation of
their corpses does not constitute a
crime. And not only that, but their
shouting today for skulls, for blood,
prisons and violence proves that the
race of red criminals continues to
develop and the SP, the struggle of the
honest people continues until the
genocide is sufficiently testified, and
finally there remain

We demand that the law be applied to the criminals
Genocide, a macabre act of the
communist system, is now an
undisputed reality. The mass pits
with the shot victims are the most
living and macabre testimony of the
communist murderers who brutally
crushed Enver Hoxha’s “enemies”.
The shooting in mourning and without
a trial, in anonymity, democracy of
the persecuted has found the strategy
to condemn them, with the result of a
tale after tale and then the
aftershocks.
In response to the question of what he
found in a pit of shot victims, Mr.
Qafai replied that it is beyond what can
be imagined. It is human length.
In the association of former political
persecuted in Berat, hundreds of
names were listed; the skulls are
waiting to be identified by forensic
specialists, based on the photographs
that we family members have
presented. I suspect that one of these
shot victims is my brother. A.V.
Aba[?] Omari.
The extraordinary act of the criminals,
prosecutors Zylyftar Velesha, Miso
Bilaci, Bexhet Mema, and party
secretary Reiz Malile is an unmatched
act.
It is the duty of the competent bodies,
such as the Ministry of the Interior and
the prosecutor’s office, the committee
of former political persecuted, the
parliamentary commission on genocide,
the archival research body, and the
forensic medicine authorities, to
identify the shot victims, while for this
criminal act against the families of the
shot victims, we demand that the law
be applied to the criminals.

by the great changes
Yesterday morning, the Secretary General of
PDSH, Mr. Tritan Shehu, and the Deputy
Chairman of PDSH, Mr. Ali Spahia, held a
working meeting with the Ambassador of the
Federal Republic of Germany, Mr. Hans
Peter Disdorn.
First, Mr. Tritan Shehu spoke about the
Albanian political spectrum, the structures,
organization and functioning of PD, the
achievements of Democratic governance in the
institutionalization of democracy, the
acceleration of the rule-of-law state, the
consolidation of the open market economy,
and the encouragement of free initiative. In
this context, said Mr. Tritan Shehu, at the end
of his speech, the Albanian democratic state
has never lacked the help and support of the
German government, especially for the rapid
integration of our country into Europe.
Meanwhile, Mr. Hans Peter Disdorn stressed
that he is impressed by the great changes that
have taken place in Albania. However, he
concluded, these take on even greater
importance if one considers the fact that
democracy is neither learned nor built in two or
three years.
At the end of the meeting, the interlocutors
expressed themselves in favor of strengthening
ties, cooperation and friendship between
Albania and Germany.
