Arrived in Tirana for official talks: the Greek Foreign Minister Karolos Papulias

The following documents were signed: The Greek minister Karolos Papulias arrived yesterday morning in Tirana, invited by his counterpart, Minister Alfred Serreqi. At Rinas Airport, Mr. Papulias met with the Albanian deputy foreign minister Pellumb Xhufi. Also present at the reception ceremony at Rinas Airport were the Greek ambassador in Tirana Kristos Zullas, the Albanian ambassador in Athens Dashnor Dervishi, as well as Greek and Albanian diplomats. The national anthems of both countries were played at Rinas Airport. As part of the official visit to Tirana, the Greek Foreign Minister, Karolos Papulias, will meet with President Sali Berisha and Prime Minister Aleksander Meksi. Today at noon, Mr. Karolos Papulias and his Albanian counterpart, Mr. Alfred Serreqi, will sign the agreement on friendship, cooperation, good neighborliness and security between the two countries. This document must be ratified by the parliaments of both countries and after that it enters into force. Another document to be signed between the two foreign ministers is the one “On economic, industrial and technological cooperation”. This document too will be ratified by the parliaments of both countries and will enter into force one month after this formality is completed. Last night as well, at the “Dajti” hotel, an official dinner was given by Foreign Minister Alfred Serreqi in honor of Minister Karolos Papulias. Tonight Minister Papulias will leave Tirana. Roundtable of understanding in the Serreqi-Papulias talks

Parties (sine) to work on this agreement. Foreign Ministers Alfred Serreqi and Karolos Papulias spoke at a press conference on the occasion of the visit to Tirana of the Greek Foreign Minister. Foreign Minister Karolos Papulias said in his speech that “the visit to Tirana will be a turning point in relations between our two countries”. He described the agreement on friendship, cooperation, good neighborliness and security as “a big step forward in relations between the two countries”. Speaking about Athens' position on the Macedonia name issue, the Greek minister said that “we cannot accept a name stolen from our history”. Regarding the issue of the Greek minority in Albania and emigration, he said that these are issues that must be addressed in a spirit of understanding and in accordance with European standards. As for the decision of the Albanian Constitutional Court on OMONIA, he expressed hope for a solution that would favor bilateral relations. Minister Alfred Serreqi, for his part, declared that Albania is determined to develop good relations with Greece on the basis of mutual respect and non-interference in internal affairs. He emphasized that the remaining unresolved problems can be solved through dialogue and political will. (Continues on page 7)
