Rilindja Demokratike

e martë 22 mars 1995

Today is 22 March...

Editorial Today is 22 March... Three years ago, on 22 March 1992, Albanian citizens, with their free vote, clearly and definitively separated Albania from a dark future, whose name was ENVER AND ENVERISM, as well as from the dark, hopeless time of communism. 22 March, the date of democracy’s triumph in Albania, marks a new stage in the country’s democratic development. The victory of the Democratic Party in the elections of 22 March 1992, which was a free and fair victory, brought about, through the vote of freedom, the overthrow of the fiercest communist dictatorship in Europe. For the first time after 47 years since the communists’ victory, Albania had a majority arising from free elections. For three consecutive years Albanians have experienced a new political and social reality, which before 1992 had been only a dream. For three years, in Albania, alongside the delays, difficulties, and unavoidable problems of the transition, the greatest steps forward have been made, both individually and socially, since the creation of the Albanian state. Albania today no longer resembles the Albania of three years ago. In three years in Albania, the face of towns and villages has changed, hundreds of private and public buildings have been erected, roads and public facilities have been rebuilt or reconstructed, freedom of speech has entered life, private property has been restored, and profound reforms have been made in economic and social life. Equally profound and shocking have been the changes in the philosophy of leadership and governance of the country. Old taboos have been broken, new relations have been established between the state and the individual. For this reason, 22 March is not just a date won on the calendar of history, but a date that will live in the nation’s memory as one of the most important days of its freedom and dignity. We have remained faithful to that contract we signed with the Albanian people on 22 March

Speaks after the President’s statement, the Democratic Party of Albania to the Albanian? Prapashti: The Democratic Party of Albania democratized Albania On the occasion of the 3rd anniversary of the elections of 22 March 1992, Ferdinand Xhaferri, spokesman for the parliamentary group of the Democratic Party, spoke yesterday at a press conference. He said that 22 March 1992 is the day when the foundations of pluralism in Albania were laid and the democratic forces were clearly separated from the neo-communist ones. According to him, since that day the Democratic Party has kept its promises to the Albanian electorate, implementing a policy of reforms in all areas of life. He regarded the democratization of the country, the restoration of private property, and the consolidation of democratic institutions as achievements. Xhaferri emphasized that the opposition is trying to distort the historical meaning of this date, but according to him citizens clearly remember that the great change began on 22 March. At the end he added that the Democratic Party would continue to remain faithful to its contract with the Albanian people. (Continues on page 4)

That day the nightmares ended and dreams were touched

EDI PALOKA The final struggle to be among the twenty victorious that prolonged in history a work of overthrowing communism, more than anything else marked a collective psychological liberation. 22 March brought the final break with fear and submission. For the first time citizens felt that their vote mattered and that the new system would give them the opportunity to build life according to their own possibilities. New horizons opened for private initiative, for freedom of speech and for a life with dignity. That is why this date remains as a day of hope and of great change. (Continues on page 4)
