April 2, 1991 - a call for justice and remembrance

LORENÇOLOGU Today, regardless of any judgment or position taken with twenty arguments, April 2, 1991, four years after the anti-communist demonstration, remains one of the most serious and most dramatic events in Albanian pluralist history. While some of those who saw it with their own eyes remember it as an anti-communist massacre, others recall it as a violent scenario by the communists and socialists; but for everyone, it remains a day of blood and a call for justice. On this date, the people of Shkodër took to the square to protest after the March 31, 1991 elections. The city, known for its oppositional spirit, experienced a tragic clash with the security forces, in which several young people were killed and many others wounded. The public memory of April 2 has become part of Albania’s democratic conscience. Today, after so many years, the message of this date is twofold: justice for the victims and remembrance for society. Without a full uncovering of the truth, April 2 remains an open wound. Without memory, it risks being used politically or forgotten. For this reason, April 2 is not just an anniversary. It is a test of the rule of law, of the will to punish political crime, and of civic responsibility not to let history be falsified.

Honor and glory to the Shkodër martyrs who stood up to the dictatorship. Shame and disgrace on those who used violence against us

PJETËR ARBNORI April 2 was both chronicle and symbol. It was pain and pride for Shkodër and for all of Albania. On that day, the citizens who came out to protest against the dictatorship and political manipulation were met with unjustifiable violence. The martyrs of April 2 remain a sign of civic resistance. Their blood sealed an era and clearly separated the past from the democratic future. Their memory demands not only homage, but also determination so that evil does not happen again. Shame on those who used weapons and power against their own people. Shame on those who still defend falsehood, who relativize the crime, and who try to cover up responsibility. Democracy cannot be built on forgetting. Today, on the anniversary of April 2, honoring the Shkodër martyrs is also a call for justice, for remembrance, and for loyalty to the ideals of freedom.
