But this is false and unsupported by reality. Only in the most limited sphere of freedoms in the former Albanian environment was Albanian women excluded from public life to such an extent as in no other country of Eastern Europe. And yet the role of Albanian women in the overthrow of the dictatorship was among the most massive in Europe. Without the brave and determined participation of Albanian women and girls in the democratic movement, God would not have blessed this movement as much as He did. They endured great sacrifices, stood at the forefront of protests, and with dignity, faith, and moral strength gave it spirit and support. Today, in the years of reforms, the role of Albanian women remains just as important. We cannot build stable democratic institutions, a market economy, and a state governed by law without the active participation of women. Albanian women have shown that they are an unavoidable factor in the emancipation of the family, in the education of the younger generation, and in the advance of Albanian society toward Europe. In these years, despite the difficulties of the transition, I am convinced that Albanian women have gained more space and dignity in public life. Democracy cannot be understood without freedom and the equal role of women. That is why LDGSH has a special mission in strengthening this role and in the worthy representation of Albanian women and girls at all levels.
