Honoring a new life for freedom

5 May... . Honoring a new life for freedom Today Albanians honor and commemorate the martyrs of the nation, fallen for freedom. 5 May is the Day of the Martyrs, which in some areas of the country is celebrated as the day of spring, the day of the rebirth of nature and of humankind, the day of the awakening of unextinguished hope that comes from the eye of the dead. This beautifully meaningful connection with 5 May makes it also a day of reflection, since so many boys and girls killed innocently in the name of freedom and socialism have been desecrated and forgotten, so much so that even others have been denied them. On this day we bow before the memory of the fallen with honor, but also with the determination not to allow either the desecration of their memory or the use of their name for narrow political interests. Today we remember that Albania has given many sons and daughters of its own, fallen in the name of freedom. But not every death dressed in the mantle of martyrdom has been such. The time has come to distinguish truth from propaganda, sacrifice from deception, ideal from political exploitation. There can be no true honor for the martyrs without respect for life, without freedom for the living person, without justice for the victims of yesterday and today. On 5 May, the greatest honor for those who fell is to defend the life, freedom, and dignity of the living. Let us not allow their name to be used to cover injustices, to justify violence, or to erase the memory of truth. Let this day be not only remembrance, but also a civic pledge for a more honest, more humane, and freer Albania. KOSTRIP V. JAJRO
