“You did not face the most dangerous part of the Berlin Wall”

You are 5,000 pioneers of democracy President Berisha meets with a delegation of the “5,000 people from the embassies” On 2 July, five years earlier, it was proved that the force arose from one of the most momentous events of our Albanian movement; it was the case of 5,000 people from Albania, compared with the dimensions of a phenomenon historically of global proportions. Albania was, and the communists were not, the heaviest blow to political pluralism suffered by Eastern Europe from a Marxist party in power. “Your 5 June struck at the totalitarian spirit of communist power, and opened the path to the peace of freedom for thousands upon thousands of people, above all for Albanian youth. It had an extraordinary echo in diplomatic circles and influenced all democratic processes. I believe that this courageous civic act by 5,000 Albanian citizens is worthy of the honor and respect due to a civilized nation such as the Albanian nation.” This is how the President of the Republic, Sali Berisha, expressed himself during the meeting with a group of people, five years after the embassy events. President Berisha described this experience as a major event in the democratic process in Albania. After President Berisha’s greeting and congratulations, Pëllumb Xhufi spoke on behalf of the group, saying among other things that Albanians have considered many events and have from time to time organized activities in honor of this date, but no other people has ever stormed the “Berlin Wall”. According to him, this had a very special meaning, which later also demonstrated the natural patriotism of the struggle for freedom. On behalf of the group, Mr. Xhufi, thanking President Berisha for the invitation, also said that “the event of 2 July preceded the fall of communism and demanded freedom first, not a change of system”. This act was praised by the President as a historic development of the Albanian people and of Albanian youth. EDMOND A?LIAJ On 25.11.1980, the Deputy Minister of the Interior Kadri Hazbiu draws up a report on measures to be taken against the hostile group of Mehmet Shehu with the aim of “implementing the decisions taken by the Central Committee of the PPSH and our proposals recently sent to the Commander-in-Chief”. Surprisingly and from many other documents (most of them in the dossier series) extracted from the 27th Movement concerning the anti-party elements of the Hazbiu group proposed by the State Security, it emerges that Enver Hoxha approved and demanded the immediate implementation of these proposals. Thus, on 20 November 1980, the Ministry of the Interior proposed the following 21 types of measures against the hostile group: 1) All persons close to them are to be put under surveillance with T.O. devices, 2) Their postal correspondence is to be monitored, 3) Measures are to be taken for their placement under external surveillance, 4) Their documents are to be checked in detail, 5) Special attention is to be given to studying the possibilities for deconspiring the location of compromising documents, 6) The activity of each individual is to be fully analyzed, 7) Measures are to be taken to neutralize contacts, 8) Movements are to be restricted, 9) Measures are to be taken to uncover other ties, 10) All operative material is to be studied, 11) Action variants are to be prepared, 12) The most dangerous elements are to be identified, 13) The most dangerous elements are to be cleansed away, 14) Network work is to be intensified, 15) Family members and friendships are to be followed, 16) Means of communication are to be controlled, 17) Previous contacts are to be verified, 18) Information is to be obtained from other sources, 19) Work is to be carried out with the party base organizations, 20) Responsibilities are to be clarified, 21) Results are to be reported periodically.
