BERISHA: “The relations have been very good, with an excellent perspective” DEMIREL: “I appreciate Albania’s efforts under President Berisha” Albanian-Turkish friendship and strategic orientations remain at a high level of understanding and cooperation. On the one hand, the relations reflect Turkey’s important role for regional peace and stability; on the other, they reflect the high regard President Berisha has for this development. This was stated by the President of the Republic, Sali Berisha, and the President of the Republic of Turkey, Sulejman Demirel, at the joint press conference. In his remarks, President Berisha described the Turkish President’s visit to Tirana as a very important event for Albanian-Turkish relations. He underlined that this visit serves to strengthen the all-round relations between our two peoples. President Berisha stressed that our countries are linked by old traditions of friendship and cooperation and that Turkey has been a valuable support for Albania during the most difficult periods. President Demirel said that he values Albania’s progress in recent years and President Berisha’s efforts in the democratic processes and the stabilization of the country. The document was drawn up on 19 March 1991 and signed by H. Milloshi, chief of the criminal police of Police Station No. 4. It clearly states that Hysni Milloshi had been arrested by the police after opposing the removal of the dictator’s bust and organizing a demonstration. A facsimile of the document is presented as evidence. In the readable parts it says that the person called for obstructing government decisions and for defending the symbols of the dictatorship. President Berisha gave a warm and brotherly welcome to the President of the Republic of Turkey, Sulejman Demirel, who arrived yesterday in Tirana for an official visit. The welcoming ceremony took place at the Presidential office, where senior state officials, diplomats and media representatives were present. During the meeting, further development of bilateral cooperation, Turkey’s role in the region and support for democratic processes in Albania were discussed. The two presidents praised the traditional relations of friendship between the two countries and expressed their wish to intensify cooperation in the fields of economy, culture and defense. The House of Representatives of the American Congress announced yesterday the draft bill for Kosovo, which includes support for the rights of Albanians in this region. According to the report, the amendment calls for greater attention to human rights violations and supports a peaceful solution to the Kosovo issue.
