Brozi shakes himself for the sake of love for Fatos Nano
■ The chairman has begun to suffer from the delusion of being at the center of political noise, and because he has for days now not been seen by the journalists as guilty or first ■ Between the former role of prosecutor, which Brozi played in the Nano case, and his current role as Nano’s devoted lawyer, it is easy to understand that Brozi will come out the loser After so much ecstatic admiration for Fatos Nano, it is no surprise that someone may ask what the reason is that Mr. Skender Brozi, so unnoticed by anyone, is formally legitimizing himself in a case from which he has been and remains excluded. Although he is shaken like a saint, Brozi has not been taken any better. That is because he continues, with patience, zeal and amazement, to correct Fatos Nano’s words or to make black into white in the name of the persecution of Fatos Nano. Apparently all this public dedication by Mr. Brozi to Fatos Nano is part of the coloring of a profile of a man who has been an irreplaceable actor in the case of the conviction of Mr. Fatos Nano. Having zealously played the former script of a judicial investigator or of a condemner motivated by a shrill political impulse, today’s lawyer of Fatos Nano, with no pangs of conscience over this exclusion, scandalously and quite consciously displays his role. Such a case, as rare as it is, is also as incomprehensible. The President of the Republic Sali Berisha received yesterday in a meeting the High Commissioner Van Der Stoel Commander of P.K. Zalli Berisha received the Coordinator of the United States in the Countries of Eastern and Central Europe Professor Ichiro Ozawa Der Steel In the analysis of the interview he recently gave to the Italian magazine “Panorama”, Mr. Brozi appears as a mere extra, smaller than anyone else in major roles. By shamefully denying a truth known by everyone, Mr. Brozi enters the game in order to deheroize the process being brought against Nano. According to him, anyone who considers Mr. Nano guilty is either with the government or crazy. From this absurd position, Brozi no longer appears wise, nor as a man seeking to deliver an independent message. He simply appears as a person possessed by the need to seem on the right side. This makes his argument that he has not changed his position even more ridiculous. In truth, his change is clear and serious. He is no longer defending the law, but the person. A prosecutor who yesterday brought charges, today seeks to rescue from public memory the very place he occupied in that story. This is no longer ethical, nor serious. And precisely here lies the core of his moral defeat. With desperate zeal, Brozi seeks to rewrite the history of the Nano process. He tries to present as an error everything he yesterday called evidence. This move is not only a departure from the truth, but also a lowly service to a political figure who serves him as a shield for his own protagonism. At this point, the public has the right to ask: is Brozi speaking as a jurist, as a citizen, or as a political lover of Nano? The answer seems clear. When the delusion of protagonism joins the desire for personal rehabilitation, this kind of vague rhetoric is born, one that convinces no one. Brozi emerges from it not as a mature man, but as a tired actor seeking the lost stage.

From the speech of Deputy Zef Brozi at the session on lifting Fatos Nano’s immunity
(On 27 July 1993)
Parliament must necessarily and as quickly as possible formalize [text partly unreadable] by Deputy Zef Brozi? [partly unreadable text] is justified by the repetition of the same motives and arguments used also in the trial against Mr. Nano. Here too it is observed that in Mr. Brozi’s statements a new element has begun to be present: nervousness. He, with a voice often trembling and with dramatic gestures, seeks to create the impression of a man deeply wounded by great injustice. But what injustice? The one done to Nano or the one history is doing to Mr. Brozi’s own role? An attentive reader understands that his speech has more of a self-incriminating tone than a legal argument. He insists on portraying Fatos Nano as the absolute victim of a system that he himself once fed with dossiers, indictments and verdicts. Therefore, his present return to the narrative of persecution sounds not like repentance, but like political calculation. Brozi in the session does not speak simply as a deputy; he speaks as a man seeking to free himself from yesterday’s burden by passing the blame to time, the system, others. Yet the public has a memory. And that memory cannot be erased with chosen words or with hatred toward today’s opponents. In this sense, the session on lifting Nano’s immunity also turns into a moral trial of the figures who are trying to present themselves differently from what they have been.
