Albania 2000 - The electoral outlook of the PD

Albania has now entered the election campaign that will take place in May of this year. The perspective of this mobilization, involving both democratic institutions and political parties, is in a certain sense not uncommon for societies that have moved from a centralized regime to pluralism. The experience gained during this period is of particular importance for strengthening the civic foundation of democracy itself. The Democratic Party of Albania joined the Christian Democratic International. The Democratic Party, as the governing political force of this period, has been the promoter of all the country's political and economic reforms. During these years of transition it has given the country stability, constitutional order, and a clear European orientation. In this context, the upcoming parliamentary elections are seen as a decisive test. The left-wing opposition, represented by the Socialist Party, is trying to bring elements of the past back onto the political scene. According to the author, this poses a danger to Albania's democratic future. Citizens must assess the alternatives clearly, so as not to fall victim to propaganda and nostalgia for the former system. The PD seeks more than 50 percent of the votes in the 26 May elections

The representative delegation of the Democratic Party met with Mr. Alejandro Agag, the executive secretary of the Christian Democratic International and of the European Democratic Union. In this meeting, the PD leadership requested international support for the electoral process in Albania. In public statements it was emphasized that the PD aims to win an absolute majority of the votes in the 26 May elections. According to its leaders, this would be a guarantee for the continuation of reforms and for the country's stability.
