The red throne, a serious threat to the achievements of democracy
Press conference of President Berisha
The red throne, a serious threat
to the achievements of democracy
Taking the floor at
the press conference
for the press, the President of the
Republic stood
ehind the idea of an
anti-communist front, forgetting
that he himself had said some
time ago that he would work in a
centre-right front. The statements
made yesterday by
two representatives of the PDSh are of
interest; in our view, they seem to
give a new direction to the possibility
of uniting against communism.
Naturally, he is referring to the
post-communist left. We still do
not have a clear orientation for
the future of the PDSh. To
create a liberal,
republican party or a confederation
of centre-right parties? But
the alternative of an
anti-communist front implies that
forces such as Legaliteti, PBKD or Balli Kombëtar
would also be included. These three
formations have for years been
opponents of the PDSh and in
that sense create a reserve
stance among many sectors of
centre and right-wing voters,
the head of state further said.
He declared that regarding the
Genocide Law, he thinks it is in the
continuity of all legislation of recent
years.
This is a revaluation, in ethical terms,
of a figure that was
an unconditional denunciation of a
regime which did not base itself on
a change of the ruling class,
but also on its own internal mistakes,
problems that followed one after another.
He described the resolution of the Council of
Europe as a political gesture. As you know,
we too have examined these matters
with seriousness. We have not yet
assessed the genocide issue, but every person must
take their own responsibilities. The effective
implementation of this law would
require following an
institutional line, which should not remain
merely at the level of political denunciations, but
also in clear evidence and procedures.
The President assessed that
everything will be done within the framework of
the rule of law.
Regarding relations with
neighbors, the President stressed that
Albania has never been for
useless confrontations, but for
normal and open relations.
Attention was also paid to
economic developments and the role of
political stability. In this context,
the head of state assessed that the country needs
calm, honest elections and the
strengthening of democratic institutions.
Sympathy and support from the European Parliament
Sympathy and
support from the
European Parliament
In the meeting he had yesterday with
the Member of the European Parliament
Giovanni e Sidoti regarding
PS relations with ultracommunist parties
with new names, Stalinist names, and with the Italian
social democrats, the chairman of the
PD parliamentary group Tritan Shehu
said that the PS position in recent years
regarding its attempts at revival
has distanced it from democratic ideas. The agreement with
the Italian social democrats apparently
was sealed with two consecutive visits.
The fact that Andrea
considered as a natural move the PS agreements with extremist parties
leaves no room for
interpretation. He described this as part of
the same left-wing strategy of
linking up with forces that have not
distanced themselves from the past.
Further on, Mr. Shehu said that
the Democratic Party supports any
communication with centre-right and
moderate forces, but cannot accept the normalization
of alliances with groups that have not abandoned the Stalinist
legacy. In this context he also spoke
about the importance of the support
Albania enjoys in European institutions
and about the interest of the European Parliament in developments
in the country.
