President Berisha in Paris President Berisha was received today, outside the programme, by the president of the French Senate, Rene Monori. In honour of the Albanian president, President Monori hosted a working lunch attended by senators, ministers, businesspeople, and executives of major French companies and banks. During the meeting, Mr Monori noted that the pace of change in Albania was very rapid. He emphasized that during his visit to Albania he had seen and felt at first hand the country’s unparalleled changes on the difficult road to building democracy. France, he underlined, would strongly support Albania’s full integration into European structures. “We are for your victory and that of the Democratic Party in the upcoming elections,” he told President Berisha. President Berisha, for his part, thanked the French government for its contribution to resolving the gold issue and also requested assistance from the French government agency for investment security. President Berisha then responded to the keen interest of French businesspeople in Albanian legislation and the conditions and guarantees for investment in Albania. Last night, French Prime Minister Alen Zhype hosted a dinner at which President Berisha was the guest of honour. Among those invited were Zhiskar D’Estën, Mesud Djallma, Vaclav Klaus and many other distinguished figures. At the dinner, the parties of the right expressed their determination to support the victory of the Democratic Party and President Berisha in the upcoming elections. At the invitation of Mr Alois Mok, chairman of the European Democratic Union, which brings together the centre-right parties of Western Europe, and of French Prime Minister Alen Zhype, President of the Republic of Albania Sali Berisha arrived in Paris to take part in the proceedings of the EDU summit of leaders of the European Democratic Union. President Berisha is accompanied by the Secretary-General of the Democratic Party of Albania, Tritan Shehu.

Enverism is a phenomenon in Albanian politics, embodied in the leadership, membership and political movement of the Socialist Party. Is this not also a clear expression of a revival of this familiar, dangerous idea, of the socialist evil of their star and of Enverist methods in implementing their policy? Albania has not arrived here sincerely, nor through concrete actions that have brought Albania forward, but through the necessity of a certain clan, represented today by former State Security officials, former high-level collaborators of that period, former criminals and bearers of these unpunished crimes of the dictatorship, and fanatics of this criminal group who vegetate in the leadership of the Socialist Party. The coldness with which they treat the condemnation and downfall of the class struggle, as well as their opposition to reforms in Albania, points to a platform that was not called forth by democracy on their political stage, but has finally been brought within the opposition party, drawing it into that more conservative political group made up of the former communist left. They have now begun putting forward their ideas about what has been accomplished in the new republic. Fatos Nano, the conveyer of words, together with former Interior Minister Gramoz Ruçi and Kastriot Islami, the ideologue in the shadows, Servet Pëllumbi and the progressives or other socialist institutions, are all part of this propaganda front. Sëmaji, etc. Everything is within the structure that the dictator created to keep his palace intact, and the fact is that in Albania things are being strengthened and kept untouched by those close to the elements that have torn Albania apart. The leaders of the Democratic Party have had to devote most of their efforts to its programme for Albania’s full development, in politics as well as in the economy, integration and other areas. I do not think they should cooperate in a principled manner with the left-wing opposition in Albania. This is not a break with the past and has nothing to do with the linear timeline of the development of politics in Albania. Albania’s future must have coherence. That is what the Democratic Party aspires to as well. This communist exercise has not been covered up by the course of events. It would remain so if it were a journey, but not in cases where it is clear that the programme of a party proves to be the main force of the Albanian left and its strengthening. Communism in Albania is not the past if a party continues to act against the law to implement the regime, if it is against privatization and against human rights and truth, if it supports a centralized economy and does not break away from the failed material legacy of communism, if it preserves criminal histories and general ideas that reinforce Enver’s failure, and if it forces its undertakings through violence. The Democratic Party is not being unreasonable in calling the Socialist Party, its programme and the communist strategy devised by its leader into question. Turning away from Enverism is a sign of the future and serves that future—the future in which Albanians must build a democratic, secure and developed society. The presence of Enverism within the Socialist Party also poses a threat to national stability. It has not been long since the Albanian press and the Albanian public learned the figures for Serbian funding of these parties, but two days ago there was also this statement, which, if true, would make them Belgrade’s allies. The Socialist Party has revealed itself by choosing to wage a struggle against Albania’s rules, Albania’s freedom, its thought and its achievements. Its case is an unprecedented one in the history of political parties. Meanwhile, the Socialist leader has chosen a future with the communist face created by its past and origins.

The deputy chairman of the Socialist Party, Servet Pëllumbi, delivers his own final elegy in an interview he gave yesterday to “ZP.” He gave a two-page interview to his state newspaper, seemingly both as a premonition of his departure and as a final honorarium for the party that used him so much.
