Albania in the West

President Berisha’s speech with intellectuals from across the country Today, we can state with complete confidence that 22 March 1992, the day of the epochal break, opened a different perspective for Albanians. This is because on the morning of 22 March Albanians were also emerging from the hell of class struggle, with the veil of terror, with justice now turned into persecution, with the return of property that had been taken away, with the persecution of everything or anyone who had created value or freedom; in a word, with the restoration of the law of hatred and revenge. It is clear that the decisions that led us toward retreat into the vicious spiral of crisis and national ruin were not made by us, but by the dictatorship of the proletariat, which replaced freedoms with police terror, replaced the rule-of-law state with its illegal power, replaced free initiative with the centralized economy, replaced property with its barbaric collectivization and nationalization, and replaced punishment for crime with the endless social degradation of man. With the great wisdom that characterizes it, before communism our wonderful artistic and literary, scientific and technical, professional and entrepreneurial intelligentsia, the world of free labor, reason and patriotic democratic thought, was confined to internment, prisons and exile. Intellectuals were forced to remain silent or be crushed. Therefore, our country, isolated from others, with a system completely incompatible with human freedom and European values, remained plunged in poverty, shortages, hopelessness and a failed economy. In these years of democracy we have taken important steps toward Europe and the West. We have consolidated political pluralism, the free market, private property and the institutions of the rule of law. For the first time, the Albanian citizen feels free to vote, to create, to believe and to build his future. This is our greatest achievement. Albania is moving along its European path. No one can any longer reverse this historic decision of the Albanians. We will build an open, just and prosperous society, where intellectuals will have their irreplaceable role in shaping public opinion and national consciousness. CHRONICLE

Albania[?] the anti-democratic force[?] ordinal[?] po[?]rdin[?]ore

the Albanian [fomosos?] Albanians as a Western democratic arrow It is clear that the undeniable difficulties that continue to accompany the state of democracy in our country have a common denominator: the existential crisis in which they find themselves and how to deal with it. This is because all institutions, but first and foremost the committed forces, especially those of the extremist fringe, decided to demoralize and boycott the governance of the country and its integration, in order to resolve the issue by force. Power[?], I also affirm that the great strengthening of the country’s stability implies preventing all anti-state and anti-institutional political adventures. In this framework, no one can succeed in undermining the foundations of pluralism in Albania. On the contrary, Albanian democracy will move forward with determination and with the support of its citizens. Punishment for Trandafil Fleti, editor-in-chief of “RD”

Decree of President Berisha Today, after some time, on 20-3-1996, the President of the Republic of Albania, Sali Berisha, decreed the reinstatement of the decoration “Martyr of Democracy,” awarded posthumously to Trandafil Fleti, which had been unjustly removed in 1945 by the communist regime. Trandafil died fighting like a free man, at only 22 years of age, before his execution. He took his own life and did not surrender to the enemy.
