On 19 April, Scalfaro in Tirana At the invitation of the President of the Republic, Sali Berisha, the President of the Italian Republic, Oscar Luigi Scalfaro, will pay an official visit to Albania on 19 April 1996. During this visit, President Scalfaro will hold talks with the President of the Republic and other senior government officials. This is the second visit by the President of the Italian Republic to Albania.

President of the Republic Sali Berisha received World Bank Vice President Kemal Dervish. At the meeting, President Berisha and Mr Dervish discussed the achievements of economic reform in Albania. Mr Kemal Dervish congratulated Albania on the latest figures in the report of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe. With economic growth of 16%, far higher than that of all the countries of Central and Eastern Europe, Albania is undoubtedly the country of the economic miracle, he said. It is now necessary to preserve and accelerate these rates of development. Responding to President Berisha’s greetings from World Bank President Ulffenson, Mr Kemal Dervish assured President Berisha that they are pleased with the progress of Albania’s projects with the World Bank and are determined to continue their cooperation with it.

Some of those candidates for parliament who constitute that mission and [unclear] of the Verification Commission have not returned together for three days, along with those who suffered... Some minimize their presence in these calculated hands, as if it were somehow… [partly illegible] These people do not ask; they had no reason to see their [unclear] from the doctors who emerged, their victims before them and for days, nor even to any small extent... [text continues outside the frame] newspapers and to hear their truthfulness before witnesses, neither more nor less than as members of parliament in institutions, in the important institutions of the Albanian state, Parliament. These candidates and everyone saw the victims of the barony and should not forget them. In this way they might revive at least a little of the trust they had lost sight of, and not tolerate investments only in this camp. If notorious spies, in their future role as members of parliament, unclean before the people, seek to establish their innocence, this is an extreme case. If the slanderers accept as true what the witnesses testify, that too would be an extreme case. The two cases above speak of an abnormal society. Albania is not at such a level of misfortune as to let criminals, as in other countries, be able to make things right without anyone forgetting what they did. The country has lined up [unclear] and infrastructure so that none of those who were infiltrated, whatever their origins, can be seen trying to return to the privileged positions created for them through all the support at the people’s expense. It is not enough for the official side to verify the appointment of the country; [unclear] the provocateurs, none of them should have the courage to continue provoking through their fallen, slanderous statements. Those people who have continued to appear as spies and political persecutors will continue to face punishment. Threats from those responsible for the evil of the two declared “ZP” [unclear], wanting to stay alive, have lost any sense of guilt and irresponsibility, and threaten the judiciary. Even after this conversation, [unclear] achieve it. They cannot bring down the living slanderers, all of them, the steadfast and those who have passed through [unclear]. “The DP will get 49 percent in the election, compared with 20 percent, which the poll assigns to the Socialists.” According to an American poll Optimism in the DP ahead of the coming elections. The results of an American poll, made known yesterday by the Democratic Party, indicate that it has an advantage over its rivals... Meanwhile, the SP’s supporters “are reduction in unemployment and inflation, especially over the past year.” With only a few weeks to go before election day, polls are the weapon with which the parties are now fighting. While the DP has seen itself in first place several times, the Socialists likewise, based on polls they conducted themselves, are declaring victory in the election. USA

The Italian Socialist prime minister and former PSI secretary, Beino Craxi, were finally sentenced by an Italian court for corruption to 8 years and 3 months’ imprisonment. In addition to the serious criminal offense, Craxi was ordered to pay the Italian state 50 billion lire (or the sum of 40 million dollars) in damages. As is known, Craxi has continued to hide in Tunisia since ... [The court] has sentenced the former PSI secretary several times. Craxi is now one of the most hated figures in Italy and a symbol of evil and corruption. It is now a well-known fact that by his friend Fatos Nano. Nano has suffered the same fate as his friend, but whereas in Italy there was a Socialist Party that sentenced (morally) its former leader, the Albanian Socialists continue to keep Fatos Nano as their chairman and even make him an Honorary Citizen wherever they govern.
