Concrete steps for cooperation President Berisha received Joe Asvall The President of the Republic, Dr. Sali Berisha, received yesterday Mr. Piero [Joe] Asvall, director for Albania and Albania [sic] at the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD). The conversation, held in a warm and constructive atmosphere, covered issues of Albania’s cooperation with the EBRD, as well as specific matters of mutual interest. Mr. Asvall expressed to President Berisha the EBRD’s satisfaction with the good performance of the Albanian economy, assessing that changes in the economic infrastructure, as well as the generally successful transformation of the Albanian economy, are creating a favorable ground for this cooperation. President Berisha presented the progress of privatization and macroeconomic stabilization processes, underlining the importance for the Albanian government of the further expansion of assistance in infrastructure and other priority areas. He expressed his conviction that more active cooperation with the EBRD would contribute positively to the encouragement of investment and economic development. Asvall was particularly interested in the progress of projects financed by the EBRD and in structural reforms in the country. The conversation also touched on the possibilities for the EBRD’s involvement in new projects in the energy sector, transport and private enterprises. In the morning President Berisha received the delegation from the Puglia region Concrete steps for cooperation In the morning President Berisha received the delegation from the Puglia region, led by the president of the regional council, Mr. Vito Riggio. Serbian nationalists complicate the situation in Kosovo

Statement from the Press and Information Office of the President of the Republic Sincerity for peace and uncompromising peace on the Kosovo issue, apparently do not concern the Serbian nationalists enough, but at this moment they are astonishingly being activated to provoke one another with various pretexts, creating new conflict situations. Sincerity for peace and uncompromising peace on the Kosovo issue, apparently do not concern the Serbian nationalists, but at this moment they are astonishingly being activated to provoke one another with various pretexts, creating new conflict situations. Everything is happening after the opening of the Kosovo information office, whose establishment has been received with feelings of displeasure by certain government circles and even by Serbian chauvinist circles. The hatred of Serbian extremists is apparently acting so badly that they have encouraged and incited their circles to demonstrate against the Kosovo information office, in which local political circles in Kosovo and those of Belgrade politics are involved. What is happening, while to the knowledge of the justice authorities and public order, the police force carried out an absurd and ridiculous act by arresting for days the director of the Albanian-language information newspaper “Bujku”, Ramadan Kelmendi, and two journalists from this newspaper, on fabricated charges. These highly regarded journalists, respected in Kosovo's public intellectual opinion, are being held in isolation and in inhuman conditions. The Serbian police state is once again returning to the well-known practices of the past, showing its chauvinist and anti-democratic face. Despite their propaganda, the government circles of Serbia, especially on the occasion of the opening of the Kosovo information office, have rushed to play the card of religious and historical institutions in population centers inhabited by Serbs, seeking encouragement for their organizations from other nationalist parties. How strange! Press and information offices of governments around the world do their duty of informing the public, providing a wide variety of information while respecting the laws of all countries. This is happening throughout Europe and in many countries of the world. For the first time in the history of the Albanian state, on such a day, a workplace has been organized for the press spokesman at the seat of the state presidency, in the framework of the governmental institution of the President of the Republic. However ridiculous the first words of the newly hired journalist may seem, this too exists and is legal, like everything else in democratic states. The Democratic Party in Kosovo has taken this decision. Surprisingly, if it has also agreed with the president of the country. Now there is one such office and the newspaper “Bujku”, which comes out regularly every day with political and historical information in Kosovo, and which according to its publication turns out to be a banned information office. Let us calm down a little! We are all interested in preserving peace and stability in Kosovo. The Serbian government and its police forces must stop arbitrary and malicious actions against press workers and information institutions, as is happening with the newspaper “Bujku”. Likewise, the circulation of false news about the “departure of Albanians from Kosovo” must stop, with the aim of creating internal tension and disturbing Albanian and international public opinion. Serbian rulers are engaging in small games intended more for their own public than for the general politics of Europe. It is clear that those who provoke artificial problems and complicate the situation aim to obstruct wise and fair solutions to the Kosovo issue. Such ugly and delicate games undoubtedly do not favor calm, but rather the forces that want to keep the fire of conflict burning. The President of the Republic is following such a policy with concern. He calls on the Serbian authorities to abandon provocative actions and return to the path of reason and respect for human rights and press freedom. Only this would serve to calm the situation, not the increase of tensions through thoughtless measures.
