PS, a party with a tarnished image
Foreign agencies on the latest PS congress
Local elections - the most favorable part for the PD
Only one comment can be made on the occasion of the election of the new leader of the Socialists: what kind of figure turned up? The only new figure offered on the podium of the Socialist congress was that of the Greek deputy president. This event not only revealed the torn humor of the Socialist congress, but also the final character being taken on by a political force with which personalities from the parliamentary scene and the civil and military administration are clearly identified. The press conference, one of the largest ever organized with such broad participation, fully exposed the scale of the fabrications prepared by Socialist propaganda experts assisted by foreign specialists.
Only one comment can be made on the occasion of the election of the new leader of the Socialists: what kind of figure turned up? The truth is that even the representative of the official Greek news agency in Tirana, Mr. Kaskinis, who was the only foreigner on the list of those present and who appeared on screen, was there to quote the familiar question of communist discourse, "what is his biography?" Foreign journalists in Tirana are used to the paradoxes of Albanian politics. Such a statement is meaningful in the face of the aggressiveness shown by the Socialists toward the media after the failures of 26 May and 16 June. The congress was invented by them for image purposes, but instead it reaffirmed the old political face of this party.
The question cannot be avoided as to who chose and how the old structures chose the new leadership. The congress showed that there has been no real reform in the PS and that none is taking place. It was organized only to give an appearance of something new in the old. The newly elected chairman is nothing more than the product of the same mechanism that produced the old party and its relations with power.
In the whole way the congress was presented, in the rhetoric and accusations against political opponents, in the avoidance of responsibility for electoral failures, the Socialists failed to show any sign of a reformed force. This is also evident in their relations with the press and the media, where they continue to attack with the same language and the same old reflexes.
The local elections of 20 October seem likely to be the next test for this tarnished political image. The electorate has already seen what this party offers beyond the congress façade. And the judgment it has received from the public after two successive defeats makes it difficult to win back trust.

Mother Teresa speaks for the first time after her illness
Worried about the cost of hospitalization
* I didn't have any, she said.
Mother Teresa, the well-known missionary of Indian nationality of Albanian origin, decided yesterday to ignore the doctors' orders and appear in public to take part in the funeral ritual of the nuns of her order.
According to AD, Mother Teresa's appearance before the public is the first time since the heart problems and malaria that hospitalized her on 7 August.
"I don't know when I will leave the hospital," Mother Teresa said yesterday outside the nuns' convent in Calcutta, where the Archbishop of Calcutta, Henry D'Souza, was celebrating mass for Sister Agnela, a 95-year-old nun of her order, the "Missionaries of Charity".
Mother Teresa attended a major event at the end of this month in India on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of her pontificate, but doctors advised her to rest for a few weeks. She was admitted to hospital on 26 July with a high fever, a heart condition and malaria.
A hospital spokesperson said yesterday that the cost of a special air-conditioned room for Mother Teresa, since she was admitted to the cardiology ward on 5 August, rises to as much as 3,700 dollars. The rules of her order do not allow nuns to have personal money to pay hospital expenses. "We have not received any bill. Payment has been made by donors," she said.
In hospital, Mother Teresa's doctors have made sure that she does not see any press reports about her heart problems, according to which she had suffered a heart attack. Sources close to her convent in Calcutta confirmed that they were trying to keep under control her high blood pressure and heart problems.

Nano is trying to promote people pushed by Ramiz Alia into positions
Communism and its legacy
The Albanian President, Sali Berisha, asked yesterday the economic Basha[?], owner of an American corporation? Etel Carmen Stambler, to persuade him not to try to bring back to leadership positions within the ranks of the PS servants of Enverism. Berisha made these comments during a breakfast meeting with the chairman of the American Chamber of Commerce in Albania, Kenneth [ ? ], the secretary general of the Chamber, Bernard Perry, the editor-in-chief of the newspaper "Albania", T. Mjeda, as well as American businessmen operating in Albania.
President Berisha said that in Albania communism was a real tragedy, while the Stalinist Enver Hoxha was the one who brought it into the country. Referring to the PS's election defeat, Berisha said that the policy of Socialist leaders is trying to bring back the old spirit and the people of the former system.
He sharply criticized Nano and several other PS figures for attempts to bring back to office people who had served during the time of Ramiz Alia. According to him, this would be an obstacle to Albania's democratic path and would damage efforts toward Euro-Atlantic integration.

Nano discredited even within his own party
The PS congress fully discredited Nano and the choice of chairman
The latest congress of the Socialist Party was marked by strong clashes, open disagreements, and a climate of mistrust toward the main leaders. According to assessments made in the press, this congress did not produce reform, but only deepened the party's image crisis and that of its chairman.
In the discussions held, it was noted that the election of the new leader was not welcomed with enthusiasm even within the forum itself. On the contrary, the reactions were lukewarm and in many cases critical, portraying Nano as a politically worn-out figure without full support.
Analysts emphasize that the internal clashes and the inability to offer a convincing alternative have made the PS even weaker in the face of political opponents.
