Socialists, return to parliament
President Berisha with the parliamentarians
I call on the socialists, who with great responsibility toward the voters who cast their ballots for them, should come and take their seats in parliament
At yesterday's meeting of the Democratic parliamentary group, President Berisha described the opposition's position as a debate with two aims: to block the country's democratic process and to preserve its political cohesion. He added that, in his view, it is clear that Albania must move toward an unavoidable reality in which it will be different from the old system. According to the President, the opposition's walkout from parliament should not become an obstacle to reforms. He said that this parliament cannot be paralyzed by anyone and that the deputies must fulfill their mandate. The President said that a political force which does not understand the necessity of democratic institutions cannot claim to govern the country. He called for the opposition to return to parliament and for the normal continuation of parliamentary life. PAGE 3

As regards the initiative for an international conference on Albania, the final text is this: If the current political crisis were to deepen further, the international community would support the organization of an international conference on Albania with the participation of the G-7 countries and international organizations. The solution of the crisis in Albania is in everyone's interest, both for the Albanians and for Europe. The final text also supports Italy's position regarding its contacts at various levels with all Albanian political forces and with President Sali Berisha.

Kosovo deserves to receive all the rights that belong to it
An edited interview with Ismail Kadare given to RTV on 18 December 1996
I think that in general, when a people suffers, when there are major serious, dramatic problems, it can never remain silent. A people that is willing to remain silent about suffering and subjugation is a people that has given up the universal. This is a generally valid universal statement. This cannot exclude the Albanians of Kosovo either
