Mr. Nano’s demand, made in his interview with the BBC on 17 March 1997, for the President of the Republic to resign the day after Mr. Berisha granted him amnesty, runs counter to the National Reconciliation Platform presented by the President and approved by all political forces, including the Socialist Party. This agreement, signed on 9 March 1997, is very important; it has a noble purpose and serves stability in the country. With this demand, Mr. Nano apparently seeks to diminish the value of this agreement and to put even those who signed it together with the President in a difficult position. As for his statement that he would run for President of the Republic, I think it is inappropriate at the present moment, when the spirit of National Reconciliation should prevail, not the pursuit of power.

National reconciliation is achieved through dialogue and sincere cooperation, not through weapons and ultimatums

Economic and political progress, reconciliation and the future require all of us, as a nation, to rise above ourselves, to respect and honor ourselves. The national equilibrium achieved through the joint formula of President Berisha and the country’s political forces is the that has arisen, the only means of overcoming resentments, grudges and accursed acts of revenge. Stable democracy, constitutional order and future development will be achieved only by assessing the situation realistically, only through tolerant and constructive dialogue, and by listening wisely to one another—to observations and fair criticism. The DP calls on the Albanian opposition to cooperate honestly to ease tensions, to lay down the weapons that are taking people’s lives, and to safeguard democracy, the market economy and every positive achievement of those few years of democracy. The DP calls on its structures to serve this cooperation with dedication, calm and patriotism. Let no Democrat think that democracy can be built without facing trials and great difficulties. What matters is that every member and supporter rise to the occasion. What matters is that every DP member and supporter, every Albanian who believes in freedom and democracy, contribute to national peace, democracy and finding ways to unite us. As a party that contributes to reconciliation and peace, to the inalienable values of faith in people, freedom and civic cooperation, the DP welcomes the contribution of all its party, social, civic and intellectual structures. It also calls on and welcomes all right-wing activists, the founders of the DP who were forced to leave by certain disloyal people, intellectuals and good people who have contributed to a better life and personal democracy. What is needed in cooperation now is freedom and democracy. Our beloved homeland, and national reconciliation. Let us serve the spirit of reconciliation today, because Albania will be grateful to us forever.
