He stated that pressure on the candidates and leaders of the PD continues to increase, in order to withdraw their candidacies. Mr. Berisha said that the terror of force and crime is being widely used against opposition candidates, as evidenced by yesterday's events in Elbasan, Berat, Vlorë and Përmet, as well as yesterday's six cases in Tirana. This campaign of violence, he said, is aimed at creating panic and tension, damaging the electoral process and hindering free voting. The President of the Republic, Sali Berisha, received yesterday at noon the Austrian ambassador in Tirana, Mr. Wolfgang Petritsch, with whom he had a long conversation about recent developments in the country. During the conversation, President Berisha gave an overview of the political and social situation, stressing that bandit groups and certain segments of the PS are trying to create an atmosphere of insecurity in order to obstruct the elections. He also emphasized that despite the threats, the PD and its candidates will continue meetings with the electorate and the campaign throughout the country. Continued on page 4

In several areas of the country, pressure, threats and attempts to prevent the normal development of the electoral campaign are reported.
