Today, the Democratic Party is taking part in more than twenty runoffs. This vote is a vote expressing distance from the former communists. No one should be swayed by their victory. It is not a victory. June 29 is a Leninist revolutionary event and has very little to do with what an Albanian parliament should have been. The voting took place under the violence of guns, while in places ruled by the committees it was impossible for the DP to compete. The euphoric Socialists must be stopped. By stopping them tomorrow, Albanians will have stopped the victory that was planned in advance—the most anti-democratic victory in the world, the darkest victory ever won by a party in a democratic state. The votes for the SP came amid fear of death, amid the spirits of around 2,000 people killed throughout Albania, amid the stench of the country’s history. The Socialists’ victory is linked to the burning of libraries, museums and municipal buildings, to the burning of people and their drowning. It is linked to the worst massacre in the South, to vile acts, violence and robbery. It is linked to the mafia and the worst breed of criminals this country has ever known. Without this criminal world, which the SP fostered and brought into being in cooperation with the most anti-Albanian forces in the world, without this violence and chaos that swept through the country, it could not have won. Do not vote for the Socialist Party. Think of Fatos Nano as you approach the ballot box and be certain that, as you try to think, you will choose the DP. Remember that the party that won was the one that, five days after its victory, drenched Tirana in blood, the one that organized the State Security Service within five days and fired on Turkmen. Remember that the winning party has Bashkim Fino as prime minister—the man who, for the sake of a post, killed the innocent 25-year-old, while terrorizing Albanians and the media in interviews, and currying Enver Hoxha’s favor against the distinguished figures of history. Remember that the winning party, six days later, opened the southern borders to the bulldozers of the Vorio-Epirotes and stood silent as they razed a village. Remember that this is the party which, after the people of the South had been robbed and criminal Greeks had acted in Tirana, Vorë and elsewhere, is now rewarding those who took hundreds of lives in all the districts of Albania, as well as those who stole votes throughout the country. Remember that it is the party of the committees that has won: the committees responsible for crime, violence, vandalism, insecurity and oppression throughout the country. Those committees are the party’s people. They are all governing as committees, in Tirana, Durrës, Shkodër and everywhere. Fight the committees with your vote tomorrow; expose the criminals and prevent a parliament of crime, whose laws will reek of murder, violence and criminal power. Do not think that by voting for the SP you voted for the party of victory. No. The SP is the party of defeat and violence, because it will be consumed by it. Anyone who voted for it will realize tomorrow that they chose the party of terror and crime to govern the country. Anyone who did not think carefully last Sunday still has the chance to think now. Anyone who was frightened on Sunday and looked toward the SP gang in fear should not be afraid today. History changes very quickly. These two ballots are stained with blood. This is a complicated matter. Never forget that this is no such victory. June 29 is a defeat for democracy. From now on, the choice made at the ballot box has put all citizens in one circle. It is the circle of their region and residence, with the lesson that one is only in the right place when one is not careless. The DP must be stopped in its anti-democratic revenge. This must be done for the sake of those who were killed and for the sake of those who wish to forgive. Let this be the beginning of the SP’s defeat and of democracy’s victory in Albania.

Thousands of residents of the capital accompanied yesterday to his final resting place the first victim of the communists’ return to power. A long funeral procession accompanied the lifeless body of Agim Gjonpalaj from Lapraka, his parents’ home, to the Palace of Congresses, where the monarchists’ rally was met with police gunfire. Over a bunch of olive branches, Gjonpalaj’s mother, relatives and friends mourned the deceased 23-year-old for a few moments; the Minister of the Royal Court, Abedin Mulosmanaj, called him the first martyr of the Albanian Kingdom. The mournful procession then moved in silence along “Dëshmorët e Kombit” Boulevard to “Skënderbej” Square, where thousands of monarchists and members of the Democratic Party filled the square with chants against communist terror and the Socialists’ theft of votes. Dozens of slogans written in English and Albanian could be read, including “No bullets against the people,” “Stop the secret police searches,” “No to the communist revenge,” “Murderers before justice” and “We want peace.” ON PAGE 3
