The President condemns Meidani
The comeback of the former communists against constitutional provisions and the important institutions of the state begins. The Council of Europe warns the socialists: Do not dare to touch the opposition
The elected president, Rexhep Meidani, stated yesterday regarding the Kosovar, the non-party association and independent personalities for the position of Speaker of Parliament. The first sentences of his speech are described with the view that Mr. Meidani does not recognize rebuttals and tries to present himself as a presidential figure in the implementation of the Constitution. But he does not hold to this and is shown in some passages to be afraid of Berisha’s influence in Albanian political life, with the anxiety that he remains the only voice defending democratic principles. “I have not come to replace the government, but to do what is my duty,” he said, but later he requested that the president be a guarantor of reforms, the independence of the powers, and constitutional order. This suggests a political approach that goes beyond the constitutional role.
The Council of Europe warns Albanians not to use the parliamentary majority to change the constitutional order and the independent institutions. Majdani disregards the President of the Republic by ignoring institutional tradition and aiming for a politically one-sided presidency.
Schyimer: We will close the gates of the CoE to you
The massive exclusion of the mandates of the two opposition parties is an undemocratic act; changing the balance from minority to majority and punishing the opposition is contrary to all the standards of the Council of Europe. Senior leaders of the Parliamentary Assembly have stated that Albania risks remaining in isolation if democratic norms are touched.
