... the most frightening (or so) of this opinion and strictly states that his departure, his irresponsible rise, the fight against Albanian democratic political and humanitarian schemes, the arrogant governance of power, the permanent conflicts with the opposition, demonstrative protests and the campaign of legality against the opposition, apparently constitute separate parts of an overall anti-democratic stance. This is also the reason why the above article is being released as a strong alarm to both domestic and foreign public opinion about the grave political and social situation in Albania.
Furthermore, the mentioned article also states that Mr. Arbnori is continuing his hunger strike in his office, while his health condition has deteriorated. The piece emphasizes that this strike has attracted great international interest and that various personalities have welcomed it as a democratic act against political violence. At the same time, the lack of medical care organized by the Ministry of Health is highlighted.
The article goes on to mention that the political situation in the country remains turbulent and that the opposition continues to accuse the government of repression and of trying to silence its voice. For this reason, Arbnori's hunger strike is presented as a symbol of democratic resistance.

Tobacco smuggling denounced
Only for the Tirana and Përrum district, in the period from 1 April 1996, the state collected 1 billion and 270 million lek, whereas in the same period for 1997, 380 million lek were collected, which shows a decline of more than 900 million lek, an amount corresponding to the losses from tobacco smuggling. Likewise, during this customs period, 61% of the revenue from excise duties of 5,300 million lek was also realized. Only in these two items [?!] 2 billion and 2 million lek. Only in these two items! 2 billion and 2 million lek. All of these are truly losses that have come not only from trafficking and corruption in customs but also from the lack of territorial control.

Arbnori's assistant is detained
The PDK leader, who assists Mr. Arbnori, while standing in front of his office, was forcibly taken and threatened with a weapon by three commanding police officers. Arbnori, who was in his office, managed to hear his assistant's cry. Only after the people around the office raised the alarm was he released. Meanwhile, the police continued to exert terror and control over people approaching the offices of the Democratic Party. This is another case of police pressure against the Albanian opposition.
