Tirana calls on the opposition
The majority approves its own law on state media. VETA takes the government to court. Communist backlash descends to the local level, district councils before political purge
Last night a large protest parade took place in Tirana. The protest was organized on the occasion of the meeting of the People’s Assembly, which began work at 10:00 to discuss the draft law and approve the new government bill on state and private media. The alarm raised for days by the Democratic Party, that the Albanian establishment was dictating and scandalously close to government arbitrariness, while the civil rights of Albanians were being violated by the left-wing power after the elections of 26 May, found its most massive expression yesterday on the streets of Tirana.
Today more than 6,000 people from Tirana, Durrës, Kavaja and other cities marched to the headquarters of the People’s Assembly to protest against the attempt to legalize, through a partial law, the government’s overall control over independent media. The demonstrators carried slogans and banners and shouted against the Nano government. According to the organizers, the protest was a civic response to the attempt to impose political censorship on the press and private television stations.
In the speech delivered before the crowd, opposition representatives declared that the law on state media represents a step backward for pluralism and freedom of expression. They emphasized that the battle for democratic institutions has only just begun and that citizens will not allow the return of old practices of ideological control. The protest continued for several hours and ended without serious incidents.

Gil Shkuta comments on the arbitrary decision of the parliament of Kalashnikovs
Will it continue today, will it be the government’s revenge over the citizens? The voice of the opposition is? in this Parliament, which has the opposition? Water on the fire? In the mouth of a parliament that today no longer has anything in common with the institution of lawmaking and has already taken on the features of a politically subservient forum. The opposition has long denounced the danger coming from a blind majority, ready to vote for any government initiative, without any reflection on the consequences it brings for media freedom and constitutional rights.
This present parliament resembles more a hall where orders are carried out mechanically than a tribune where arguments are confronted. If the opposition’s word is excluded, then the citizen himself remains without representation. That is why defending the right to speak and to oppose is today a defense of all Albanians.
