Rilindja Demokratike

E SHTUNË 6 shtator 1997

“You brought us back, you will answer!”

The government is bringing us back from Europe hand and foot bound. People from Mali came by speedboat, took our money and sent us to Italy. The gangs of today’s rulers forced us to leave Vlora. The new violence for the skryp has been working for a long time Together with the crowd inside the planes is also the 73-year-old man with 6 gazes-match in Albania without a flag, like a desperate victim. With a long beard, reddened eyes and tattered clothes, a miserable old man who has arrived turns himself into a corpse with open eyes. The USA cannot understand all his secret. Another from the extreme group is a young man, equally frightened. His arms tremble and his eyes fill with tears, and on his face only the words “they are after me” can be read. He says that under no circumstances can he return to Albania. During communism he spent 7 years in prison for attempted escape. Now he has left Albania because they allegedly tried to kill him. “For me it is the same as taking me straight to the bullet,” he says, crying. The government of the newspaper “of democratic light” gives no apology to bring these people back to the hell they fled from. A third person is speaking about the Albanian police. “I was in Skopje. They told me we would return to Albania without problems. Some policemen came and tied our hands and put us on the plane. Here they chased me away like a dog. I do not want to go home. No one can look at me.” Many speak of the “black forces,” of masked people who threatened them, of fathers killed, of sons disappeared, of burned houses. Oli, a boy who looks fourteen, is holding the old man’s hand. “I went to Bari by speedboat. They caught me and sent me back. I don’t know where I will go. I am afraid.” The numbers of returns in recent days are frightening. From Italy, Greece and other countries, hundreds of Albanians are being sent back every day. At Rinas airport, scenes like this are becoming routine. The government is treating these people like criminals, not victims. Their anger erupts in shouts, tears and curses against those who forced them back.

Every night more for the young and against communism

Tirana and Shkodra protest in support of Ahmeti’s hunger strike The Austrian President, Thomas Klesil[?], appeals to Mejdani, Gramoz, Ahmeti’s life and reconciliation “The reaction of Ahmeti’s supporters will be tolerated only to maintain trust in democracy” The Austrian ambassador Thomas Klesil calls on the Albanian president to restore Albanians’ faith in democracy. He asks for calm, but also for respect for the hunger strikers. In a press statement made yesterday he stressed that calming the situation requires a political gesture to avoid escalation. According to him, the president should give a conciliatory signal to reduce tensions. Klesil expresses concern about political developments and the involvement of young people in night protests in Tirana and Shkodra. He considers them a sign of deep dissatisfaction against the return of the communist spirit. The article is linked to Ahmeti’s hunger strike and the heated political climate in the country. ON PAGE 3

Mother Teresa arrives in heaven

In the spirit of the Albanians, with sorrow for the loss of “Mother Teresa” Perhaps she has taken all of Albania and all its anger with her. At the age of 87, this woman known as “Mother Teresa” died in Calcutta, causing deep sorrow throughout the world. Since yesterday Albanians, wherever they are, feel more alone. There was only one Mother Teresa, and now she has gone to the eternal world. Perhaps she has taken all of Albania with her, at least its moral honor. Mother Teresa was a sign of light in a country covered by darkness, hatred and poverty. For many, her name was the only Albanian name heard with respect throughout the world. She departed at a time when Albanians more than ever need comfort, a figure who stands above factions and hatreds. Her loss makes even more visible the moral desert into which we have fallen. From her we inherit not only charity, but also the strength to endure. Perhaps that is why today the pain for her is felt as a national pain. (page 3)
