Nano-ocracy at the Strasbourg trial

Berisha meets former Chancellor Vranicki. The OSCE envoy receives the latest information on the communist backlash against the opposition. “Alliance for Democracy” denounces the rehabilitation of genocidists by today’s state Vranicki: weak democracy in Albania. The former OSCE envoy ends his mission Vranicki’s farewell Mister Vranicki said goodbye yesterday to his difficult mission in Albania, leaving behind an atmosphere no less confused than in the first days of March this year, when he was appointed special OSCE ambassador in Tirana. Respecting the tradition of press conferences at the Rogner Hotel, the former Austrian chancellor almost did not even try to hide from Albanian journalists the relief caused by the end of his mandate, even though there were still several hours left before taking the plane to Vienna. But why all this excitement in Vranicki, who has long said that he felt happy that from yesterday he would be able to come to Albania only as a tourist? As one of the most influential foreigners and most closely tied to the Albanian problems of the disastrous year 1997, the former chancellor knew better than anyone in the world that the rigged elections of 29 June in Albania were only a solution acceptable under the circumstances. The only essential change that has occurred since the hot days of March is that the road right, of terror, murders, burnings, and destruction, today is the right of power, very temporary, which is trying to install dictatorship in Albania after only five years of separation from communism. Vranicki could not hide the relief he felt at the end of his mission in Albania, since only a few days earlier the right wing, communized by the power of Fatos Nano, had declared innocent the genocidists of the high communist nomenklatura, who for 50 years in a row steeped the country in the fiercest dictatorship on the continent. If in the months of February and March armed gangs were killing and robbing not only in a direction against the democrats, but were exercising unprecedented terror against the entire civilian population in many cities of Albania, yesterday state power has been given by their own prime ministers to their political opponents, reddening and desecrating the hall of the Albanian parliament, when opposition member Gafur Mazreku shot dead deputy Arben Broci[?], killing the deputy of Pajës Demokr[?] at Azem Hajdari. And Mister Vranicki knows well that gangs with rifles are many times more dangerous than gangs in the streets. Because if the latter can be neutralized by shutting down the state and the police forces, the mafias of power cannot be polarized[?] into dictatorships. Vranicki’s mission ends only one day after parliament returned the votes for the crime of the free hour[?] of Hoxha into the history of Albania. At least the press presentation of member Piro Buda[?] and inspired by the Marxist Mak[?] Hasani, the real face of this parliament, turned the socialist deputy back into a Europe and of Tito the fates of Albania’s liberation. And the same most incriminated prime minister in Europe had signed the pardon of the ecclesiastical cup[?] of the Albanian mafia. This local administration of 420 employees and their replacement with agitators and party militants. Vranicki cannot but know[?] in relief that he was finally leaving a country where murder, to guarantee monopoly abuse, and the disintegration of the opposition are two strong forms of hatred that are bringing down not only the Albanian people but also the life of the Democratic Parliament. He could not fail to understand that the conceptual closing[?] of his mission also exempts Mr. Vranicki from the heaviest responsibility for what has happened in Albania. (continued on page 3) Berisha meets Vranicki. The former Austrian chancellor leaves Albania, OSCE continues its mission Vranicki warns of political changes The International Community is prepared for rapid political changes in Albania. These were confirmed by Vranicki, who declared that the future diplomat, who will replace him at the OSCE, has also been identified ON PAGE 3

Mejdani intensifies political activity

Mejdani intensifies political activity Rexhep Mejdani had a very busy political week as President of Albania. After several face-to-face meetings with organizations of prominent figures in the country’s public life, he also had a telephone conversation with the former Austrian chancellor, Franz Vranicki, who yesterday concluded a two-day visit to Albania. Also on Thursday evening he met with Chinese businessman Mr. Cheng Do, who requested the reactivation of relations in all fields, including sports. The Press and Information Office at the President’s Office announced yesterday that Mejdani, together with Paul Gjde[?] and Andre Dada[?], departed for a visit to Geneva. Also yesterday, a few hours before departure, Mejdani went to Rinas Airport to receive with full honors his “counterpart”, the former chairman of the Communist Party of Italy, Mr. Achille Occhetto.
