28 November, the true holiday
This afternoon Albania celebrates the 85th anniversary of the declaration of independence, and Albanians around the world will remember with respect Ismail Qemali and the men who founded the Albanian state. Why, with this 28 November, does our country not have a day? Can this day be called a true holiday for Albanians? A quick look at recent events is enough to clearly understand that Albanians lack not only the basic conditions for celebrating, but also the very freedom and rights that their forefathers proclaimed 85 years ago in Vlora. The Albanian Parliament has become, before the eyes of the whole world, a forum where the opposition and its voice are violated by police means and party flags. The municipal and communal councils, elected by the people through voting, are dismissed with a stroke of the pen and replaced by political commissioners. The country's laws are trampled underfoot and the police, with their dogs, pursue the government's political opponents. Local government is being replaced everywhere by prefects and commissioners coming from the center. This is driving the country toward a situation where democracy remains only a name and the law a decoration. For this reason, the reprimand that European parliamentarians delivered to Albania yesterday is severe and deserved.
Mrs. Doris Pack, who headed the delegation of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the European Parliament, declared that what she saw in Albania was not reconciliation, but revenge by the majority. According to her, justice has been violated, parliament has been violated, and so has local government. She stressed that Albania must meet European conditions and standards if it wants to be part of Europe. Mrs. Pack called the political climate created here unacceptable and warned that no one can receive international support if they move against the law and democratic standards.
In meetings with Albanian leaders, the European delegation demanded genuine dialogue and respect for institutions. They stated that there can be no national reconciliation when the opposition is excluded from parliament and when local government bodies are replaced by political appointments. According to them, this is pulling Albania away from Europe and onto a dangerous path of destabilization.
In the end, Mrs. Pack also spoke bluntly about the positions of some Albanian politicians, saying: “Don't take Ceka seriously”.

Hundreds of thousands of people everywhere in the world will experience this sacred day with longing and with love for the homeland. However, this holiday comes at a difficult time for Albania, when freedom, the law and the institutions are being put to the test. 28 November reminds us not only of the flag and the sacrifices of the nation's fathers, but also of the duty to preserve the state and democracy. Only a free and democratic country can properly honor this day.
From Ismail Qemali's Vlora to every Albanian home, this date remains a source of pride and hope. It invites us to think about the road traveled and the responsibility we have toward the generations to come.
