The leader of the Democratic Party, Sali Berisha, showed Albanians on Sunday the opposition’s evident supremacy on the country’s political scene, reinforcing the fact that early elections, as the only solution to the crisis, are imminent. More than a year after handing power to those who took up arms, Berisha appeared before the citizens of this country lucid and clear-minded, with the high moral standing of a person and political force that has done, and can do, the best for Albania. The chairman of the Democratic Party returned without any reservations to all the events of the tenth and to his former positions as head of state, detailing the causes and protagonists of the organised chaos that plunged the country into flames and torrents of blood last year. After once again reaffirming the DP’s well-known position of acknowledging the mistakes made in government—of which the most serious was undoubtedly tolerating the fraudulent pyramid schemes—Berisha argued and demonstrated the most important causes of democracy’s collapse in Albania and identified all its enemies, now in power. Berisha’s account yesterday, which stirred not only hundreds of thousands of Democratic Party supporters but also his political opponents in front of the television screen, stood in stark contrast to the current government’s growing reluctance to engage with the public. Just two weeks ago, Prime Minister Nano hid from Albanians behind long-winded and incomprehensible phrases and forced them to change the television channel. If even the Socialists themselves have begun openly complaining that they need an interpreter to understand what their leader says, this is not some unforeseeable or innate defect of the prime minister, but rather his attempt to avoid direct debate with Albanian voters. The contrast between Berisha’s and Nano’s transparency—or, more generally, between the leaders of the DP and the government—is in fact also the measure of the present strength of the opposition compared with a government that sometimes governs and sometimes does not govern at all. Berisha showed yesterday that the Democratic Party, today’s opposition, has a clear conscience before Albanians regarding its past, present and future. The Democratic Party is the only political force that has accepted its responsibility for the crisis and the disaster, which could in any case have been entirely avoided, while the arsonists, killers and instigators of the most savage human instincts have never apologised for their acts of cannibalism, just as they themselves or their predecessors never apologised for 50 years of monstrous crimes when the communist dictatorship was overthrown. The opposition found it easy to immediately restore its channels of communication with Albanian voters as soon as the emotions stirred up by the masterminds of crime had subsided. It is no coincidence that it enjoys complete integrity throughout the country, while Nano’s government officials do not have the courage to look in the eye even those who gave them their votes on 29 June. 107 days since the imprisonment of the former Minister of the Interior The former Minister of the Interior in the Government of National Reconciliation, Ali Kazazi, continues to be held in prison on ridiculous charges. He was detained on 14 February 1998 at the Milot Bridge, following a police ambush set for the leader of the Dijetori, Azem Hajdari, in what was an obvious attempt by the current state to incriminate the opposition. On 17 February, an indefinite detention order was issued against him. Kazazi comes from a family with well-known anti-communist traditions and is a member of the National Council of the PD.
