. While the number of people arriving from villages in Kosovo in Tropojë has reached 17,000, the government has so far sent only 7 tons of aid there. Seven tons amount to just seven thousand kilograms of goods, which, divided proportionally among those who arrived, comes to approximately 400 grams per person. That might be bread, flour, rice, oil, a mattress, a blanket, soap, etc. In other words, something barely enough to stave off hunger, not to feed each of those who arrived for even one week. But they have been here for at least four days, having also spent two other days without food. According to the calculations of the Tirana government—or judging by the aid they have received from it—each of them would now be on the verge of death. The number has meanwhile reached 17,000, while in Tirana the deputy prime minister is still occupied with trivialities and the prime minister of Crete, or Tirana’s Milošević, is convening the government committee on rendered oil to consider the possibility of absorbing the oils during the summer season. There are so many government subcommittees, yet none was assigned to address the tragic and painful situation unfolding among our brothers in western Kosovo. Any government, however cold-hearted, would in such a situation at least show the minimum official concern, if not become fully involved—some humanity is expected of all governments. Even the Greek government is considering setting up camps on its northern border. Some time ago Nano himself had welcomed the corridor for those fleeing Kosovo, devised by Gligorov after a visit to Russia. But such a corridor would have brought them to Albania. Nano should at least have thought of those whose arrival he himself had welcomed and supported. The entire Albanian government, all its offices together with ministers’ cabinets and all the departments it encompasses, have failed to do as much as a private radio station with two offices and a staff of five, which in just two days collected and sent around 40 tons of aid to Tropojë for the refugees. The Nano government was unable even to mobilize army vehicles and units. It is unclear what other emergency might arise that would require checking the proximity of the regime’s shift and the civilian shift at the Ministry of Defence, or the technical composition of this unit, which President Meidani himself has praised. Two weeks ago, flooding in Lezhë mobilized an entire government and all its departments. A government committee was immediately formed, and money for the flood victims was found; the first aid was followed by donations amounting to hundreds of thousands of dollars from Western countries and international organizations. The Nano government has not only betrayed the national cause, but is also carrying that betrayal further, all the way to describing the pain and suffering of those who have arrived from Deçan. If those arriving from Kosovo have managed to escape the grenades, their suppressive movements, the border guards and Serbian police, they are now realizing what those at the head of Albania have done; they have found out and are experiencing it, and are making it clear to the government as well: they expect little from it, having understood that this government has just as little connection to or support for them as it does for the rest of the country. The desperate situation of those arriving in Tropojë is proof to all Albanians that this government has no connection with them, their hardships, their drama, or the choices they are forced to make. Fatos Nano sees Albania as the mother of Milošević, while Milošević is provoking a general uprising among the Albanians.

Reuters, Euronews, APA on the attempt on Hajdari Prestigious news agencies and well-known television stations have also broadcast reports about the failed assassination attempt against MP Azem Hajdari and other opposition leaders on Wednesday evening in the town of Bajram Curri. Reuters, APA, Euronews and many other agencies and television stations stressed in their reports that the assassination attempt was the work of the Serbian secret service, the UDB, many of whose operatives are believed to have been stationed in areas along Albania’s northern border since the Serbian army and police began their ethnic-cleansing operations in Kosovo. In their reports, foreign agencies and television stations underscored the fact that the Tirana government’s complicity in the attack on the opposition MPs was evident. The Albanian government authorities were fully aware of the assassination attempt, and at the moment the criminal gangs carried out the attack, the opposition MPs were not accompanied by police forces, which had not responded to the Democratic Party MPs’ request to escort them while they transported food aid for those displaced from Kosovo. Statement by the Democratic Party spokesperson Yesterday, the Democratic Party spokesperson rejected a report by the Italian news agency ANSA, broadcast on RAI teletext, according to which Berisha was quoted as saying that “now, on the Kosovo issue, there is no longer room for a political solution, and the only path left is war.” Commenting on this ANSA report, the spokesperson declared that the news was entirely untrue and completely fabricated.

The government, the official media, and all Nano’s other servants have kept silent about the assassination attempt against MP Azem Hajdari in Tropojë. TV and ATSH have broadcast nothing about this extremely serious incident involving Democratic leaders, apart from a bare item in the crime section. Nor has any left-wing politician spoken out about this act, while the Western media have identified it as part of the government’s criminal schemes against the opposition. This silence on the part of politicians and government officials points to their involvement in the crime. Now even the prosecutors have no screwdrivers to find with which to disprove the bullets found on Hajdari’s car. In the Milot case, the Prosecutor General did not even wait two hours before commenting on the incident, attempting to implicate Hajdari in what the prosecutor called “an armed gang.” This time he did not comment at all, leaving everyone to hear his mercenary and his bosses, and to hear about state agencies’ involvement in attempts to physically eliminate the opposition.

111 days since the imprisonment of the former Minister of the Interior Ali Kazazi, former Minister of the Interior in the Government of National Reconciliation, continues to be held in prison after being accused of the killing of Pajetim, following the police ambush set for the December leader, Azem Hajdari, in what is an obvious attempt by the current state to incriminate the opposition. On February 17, he was placed under indefinite arrest. Kazazi comes from a family with a well-known anti-communist tradition and is a member of the DP National Council.
