A few days ago, the mayor of Tirana, Albert Brojka, had accused two hours of the struggle of a political force with slander. In an interview for “Koha Jonë”, he explained that the conflict over industrial water had turned into a battle for political control over the capital. Prime Minister Nano reacted sharply, calling this part of the political game and dismissing the opposition’s claims. ON PAGE 2

Nano and anti-pedal politics

By Astrit PA[?]I Two days earlier, Albanian Prime Minister Fatos Nano, during a visit to Italy at the invitation of the neighboring country’s government, told journalists that the Albanian government was breezing past the smuggling scandal and that the head of anti-smuggling operations, O. Puka[?], is in fact under investigation by the Prosecutor’s Office. According to him, the government stands with the anti-smuggling campaign and is taking a firm stand against this wound. But two days later, as soon as he landed in Rinas, the Albanian prime minister immediately changed his position and attacked Kosovar anti-smuggling in the harshest possible way. At the same time, Fatos Nano attacked the Prosecutor’s Office institution, openly accusing its leaders of ties to Kosovar smuggling. This double stance, once in Italy and once in Tirana, clearly shows the counter-pedal policy being pursued by the prime minister. Instead of unequivocally supporting the fight against smuggling, he tries to protect certain segments of it and strike at those investigating it. This behavior by the head of government comes at a time when public opinion is demanding clarity, transparency, and accountability regarding possible links between high-ranking officials and smuggling networks. Attacks on the Prosecutor’s Office and the silent defense of officials with immunity do nothing but increase suspicion and undermine trust in the state.
