The government’s crackdown on the opposition escalated even further in recent days, when Fatos Nano’s political police arrested 10 Democrats in Kolonjë, while 13 others from the same district are being sought by the police. The handcuffing of the Democrats of Kolonjë was ordered by the gang bosses running things in Tirana, with the aim of intimidating the opposition and creating permanent communist enclaves in several southern districts. But in fact this is only the outward appearance, while what has fueled such a crackdown is— [text continues beyond the edge of the image] In Tirana, democrat Agim Gjonpalaj was killed at a peaceful rally. He was killed by the police, who that day were taking orders from Prime Minister Bashkim Fino. The trial over the incident not only found no one guilty, but did not even treat the killing of a young Democrat as a murder. A few days after the PD entered Parliament, Democratic MP Azem Hajdari was hit by five bullets. He was shot by Socialist MP Gafurr Mazreku with the direct encouragement of Speaker of the People’s Assembly Skënder Gjinushi, Deputy Speaker Namik Dokle, and Prime Minister Fatos Nano. The current political establishment finds it very difficult to tolerate the growth or strengthening of the country’s democrats, just as it finds it difficult to coexist with the alternative. This is precisely what they seek to inherit, regardless of the consequences of the political blow they have dealt to the opposition. A government of smuggling and corruption cannot stay on its feet without political punishment through violence and physical attacks on the opposition. During the PD government and the period when they were in opposition, there were no killings or imprisonments of Albanian opposition members. In fact, they neither were nor behaved as members of the opposition, but as revolutionaries and wreckers throughout the years of democratic rule. Likewise, during those years, they were unfortunately allowed to build ready-made schemes of crime, the mafia and their networks, with all the defects of the democratic organization in its early days. If the PD government had prosecuted the socialist criminals during those years, the communist rebellion would certainly not have happened, and those criminals who are now at the head of the government and parliament would not have been able to gather their thugs from the dregs of ordinary prisons and set them on the democrats. The Kolonjë precedent is the official line of the current government. This case is no exception to the anti-opposition nature of this government. It was precisely through this stance and the integration of an anti-democratic spirit, all the way to revolution, that it managed to come to power. There is no doubt that today’s Albanian opposition is facing a government alliance of dangerous proportions, not only for the opposition but for all Albanians. When the features of a mafia society are intertwined with a parallel structure of criminal and terrorist organs within a government, then devising an anti-opposition strategy is their first task. A few days after the PD went to Parliament, the democratic MP Azem Hajdari was shot five times. He was shot by the socialist MP Gafurr Mazreku with the direct encouragement of the Speaker of the People’s Assembly, Skënder Gjinushi, Deputy Speaker Nanik Dokle and Prime Minister Fatos Nano. Around the same time, an attack was carried out against the “RD” journalist and PD National Council member, Muje Buçpapaj. The bullets came from a police car. Inside it, the police authorities gave three different accounts. No one has been held responsible for this political assassination attempt. In January of this year, three prominent PD activists, one of whom was its founder in 1990, were killed in Tropojë by socialist gangs. Abdyll Ma-toshi, Gjin Kolbucaj and Naim Dizdari were victims of a typically mafia-style trap involving the full participation of state structures. While the Albanian police were headed by Neritan Ceka, another assassination attempt against Azem Hajdari was organized. It failed, but led to the arrest of dozens of democrats. Among them, former Interior Minister Ali Kazazi was imprisoned and kept in confinement for several months. In Gjorgastër, government gunmen killed one of the city’s first democrats, Fredi Shehu, who had been responsible for toppling the dictator’s bust. Right in the middle of the city of Lushnjë, the same government hand killed one of the first democrats, the former head of SHIK in that city, Bashkim Sh-Sh. The government’s bloodstained hand is marked by dozens and dozens of other crimes, extending beyond political crime to include direct mafia-style crime. To date, dozens of citizens have disappeared or been executed; their families accuse government leadership circles of the killings. A genocide has been perpetrated against the democrats. The rebels’ bandits, disgraced State Security officers and military personnel are today the executors of the murderous government’s sinister plans. There is no opposition anywhere in the world that would accept cooperation or coexistence with organized crime, from the theft of the state to political crime. This is also why the democrats are gaining ever more ground among the people, while PD has become the largest party in Albania and the people’s only hope.
