The arrest of the Islamists,
another government bluff
News about the arrest of ten Islamists came as a staged item from the Prime Minister’s Office and the Ministry of the
Interior. In communiqué 7 there was nothing of the sort. Likewise in the other police stations
The warning “get rid of” the traders’ birds
Saliansit notes that the arrest two
...nente after... the government and the Ministry of the Interior
are watching the number of foreigners who have
come to Tirana and it reaches four. In the report
it says that “on the evening of 20.08.1998
at 21:15 the standby patrol and the duty
officer at police station no. 3 stopped on
“Myslym Shyri” street for a check
the foreign citizens Muhamed Haris, from Jordan
and Tahri Mohon, from Algeria, residing
in Tirana”.
The article below shows that these two
persons, who possessed pistols without a permit,
were simply not involved in terrorist activities or
Islamic organizations. This is because, apart from
their word, there is no evidence, no name,
no such connection. Four other people were also
checked routinely for residence permits and
passports.
The source of this news article is the Ministry of the Interior itself, which issued
its communiqué. According to it, “on 21.08.98
at 7:30 a.m. the Albanian citizen
Samedin Karrabolli, 26 years old, born and residing
in Tirana, was arrested, after a search of his home
found a TT-type pistol, 92 rounds of
7.62 mm caliber ammunition, 4 machine-gun magazines and 10
grenade fuses”.
After him, two foreign citizens were also arrested,
Said Laili, 35 years old, born in Tunisia and residing
in Tirana, and Mhumad Taleb, 36 years old from Syria,
residing in Tirana. These citizens possessed false
passports and a “Zastava”-type pistol with 7 rounds.
According to the Ministry, “the investigation is continuing for
many foreign citizens who have come to Tirana”,
while at the end TV-Te and private radio stations are also
given the same news accompanied by claims without
facts. In all the police commissariats in Tirana
there is no record of any other such arrest.
Great suspicion arises when this sudden “alarm” about
“Islamist terrorists” appears precisely when attention is
turning to the accusations over the murder of
Azem Hajdari[?]. The impression is created of a political news item
to hide other issues.
