Anti-mafia resistance
The ready groups have resisted for more than 24 hours in front of the state’s central institution.
At first, the demonstrators with stones and sticks began to be dispersed late at night. The squares and streets around the Prime Minister’s Office have taken on the appearance of a massive gathering place. Those who came from the districts, but especially the citizens of Tirana, have remained for hours in front of the large police forces, shouting against the government, Fatos Nano, the soldiers, the armed gangs and the terrorists that it has unleashed against them.
The demonstrators’ goal seems to have been clear: to demand the removal of the Nano government. This was also made clear through the many slogans, among which stood out “Nano, go away!”, “Down with the mafia government”, “Freedom-democracy”, “Free the political prisoners”, etc. At one point they burst into a powerful chant: “Death to communism!”, “Down with dictatorship!”.
Today, the police forces have been increased. Including new groups arriving from the districts, they are concentrating around the central institutions. And the demonstrators in front of them are increasing. In fact, those who yesterday demonstrated in the country’s main cities have also arrived. On the other hand, after learning about the demonstration, other citizens coming from the north and south of the country are also joining and flooding into the capital.
Nevertheless, the crowds are trying to avoid provocations. This is seen not only in the fact that women and children are still kept at the front lines, but also in their peaceful slogans. It is clear that the police [?] and the army are more interested in frightening the demonstrators by inciting unnecessary incidents. Since the early hours of the morning, strange movements of police forces have been noticed toward the ministries, the Prime Minister’s Office building, and the villa where Fatos Nano lives, who is also the chairman of the PS. On Dëshmorët e Kombit Boulevard, armored vehicles, transporters and military trucks can be seen stationed, often moving in different directions.
So far there is no exact information on the number of victims and the injured. But sources from various Tirana hospitals state that during last night there were injured people both among the demonstrators and among police officers and soldiers. Meanwhile, talk in the squares has also begun about fatalities, but everything remains unconfirmed. At the same time, during the night explosions were heard, as well as bursts of automatic gunfire, which seem to have come from near the headquarters of the PS and from Nano’s villa.
