Yesterday, at the central headquarters of the Democratic Party, a press conference was held by the chairman of the Christian Social Union (CSU) of Bavaria, Dr. Horst Afflerbach. “I am pleased to be here today to see firsthand how the Democratic Party of Albania is a serious party with a clear Western perspective. We value your political commitment and your courage in defending pluralism,” he said. Mr. Afflerbach stressed that in Europe it is necessary for Albania to have a strong and democratic opposition. “If opposition deputies are jailed here and political cases are brought against them, this is unacceptable by European democratic standards,” he said. The chairman of the Democratic Party, Dr. Sali Berisha, thanked the Bavarian delegation for its continued support. He said that the Albanian opposition is facing a climate of political repression and attempts to criminalize the government’s opponents. The meeting also stressed the need for free elections, respect for the rule of law, and the release of political prisoners. ON PAGE 3 1. 2 Sorrinja? The Prime Minister of the committees

Commentary Prime Minister Fatos Nano today made a press statement on TVSH, in which he officially expressed his political creed, a creed that Albanians have long known in practice: blind political revenge and the building of power on violence. Instead of answering to public opinion for the arrests of opposition deputies, for the beating of peaceful demonstrators, and for the political persecution of opponents, the prime minister chose to attack the opposition and threaten Albanian citizens. He spoke of the “Block” as if it were personal property, arrogantly declaring that “it is mine,” a language that recalls the mentality of the former regime and its contempt for the rule of law. This behavior confirms that Albania is sliding toward a police state, where the government uses the police and the prosecutor’s office to strike at political opponents. Albanians will not accept this backward turn. Civic protest and democratic resistance are the only response to a power that recognizes neither law, nor morality, nor democratic standards.
